VILLANOVA, Pa. – A 47-point second half and some defensive stops midway through the period helped No. 7/6 Villanova pull away from Saint Joseph's for an 88-68 victory at Finneran Pavilion Saturday night. Sophomore Jeremiah Robinson-Earl – playing with a protective mask after suffering a broken nose in Wednesday night's 85-66 win over Butler – scored 25 points, including 14 in the second half. Junior Caleb Daniels added 19 points and sophomore Justin Moore contributed 18 points for the Wildcats, who improved to 7-1 overall, 2-0 BIG EAST with their fifth consecutive triumph. Saint Joseph's fell to 0-4 overall, 0-0 Atlantic Ten, in this battle of Philadelphia Big Five rivals. The Wildcats connected on 17-fof-29 second half field goals (.607) after struggling to find the range in the first half (.417). "This was a very good game for us," stated Villanova head coach Jay Wright. "They are a very difficult team to guard. They are very unorthodox offensively with five guys out who can really shoot it. They cut hard and move well. "I thought we had a really good stretch in the second half where we defended them and that's what created the separation. They're going to be good and they're missing a couple of good players. They'll get healthy and be better. That's going to be a good win." The Wildcats built a 14-5 lead through first five minutes of action thanks to a sharp offensive attack. But the Hawks turned four straight defensive stops into a 10-0 run to take the lead at 15-14 with just more than 12 minutes to play in the period. A Cole Swider 3-pointer gave Nova back the lead 17-15 on the next possession. "They can do that to you because they play fast and can score quickly," Wright noted. After sinking five of their first nine, Villanova struggled to find an offensive flow, dropping in just 5-of-21 over the next 10 minutes of action. Saint Joseph's pulled to within 26-25 before the Wildcats responded with a 13-3 surge sparked by Jermaine Samuels, who provided five points in that stretch. At halftime, Villanova held a 41-33 lead over Saint Joseph's. Robinson-Earl supplied 11 points in the period while Samuels added nine points. Villanova offset a .417 first half field goal percentage by forcing seven Hawks turnovers, which resulted in a 9-0 edge in points off of turnovers. In the early stages of the second half, Robinson-Earl asserted himself as the offensive end. The sophomore scored 10 points in the first 8:29 of the period to help the Wildcats build a 62-50 lead over the Hawks. He explained after the game that this was the second time he had broken his nose. It also happened in the eighth grade. As luck would have it his mother, Katie Robinson, still had the mask he had donned back then and dropped it off at Villanova. It fit and he donned it in time for Friday's practice. "It's not too bad," he said. "You're focused on what you're doing and don't really pay that much attention to it while you're out there." Robinson-Earl also added seven rebounds to the cause as part of a 37- carom effort by the Wildcats. Wright also pointed to the efforts of Daniels and Moore. "They are two talented guards," said Wright. "Teams pay so much attention to Collin (Gillespie), as they did tonight, that it really frees Caleb and Justin up to make plays." Villanova is next slated to visit Marquette in a BIG EAST clash set for Wednesday night (FS1 and 95.7 Ben FM). That will be the Wildcats' final scheduled contest before Christmas Day.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Obi Enechionyia hit two free throws with 18.1 seconds left in overtime, and Temple beat No. 16 Wichita State 81-79 on Thursday night. Quinton Rose scored 19 points for the Owls (12-10, 4-6 American Athletic Conference), and Josh Brown had 15. Shizz Alston Jr. shook off a poor shooting performance to score 12 points, including the tying bucket at the end of regulation. Enechioinyia was fouled after grabbing an offensive rebound. Markis McDuffie then missed a 3 at the other end, and the rebound caromed into the backcourt as time expired and Temple fans stormed the floor. The Owls earned another big win alongside upsets of Clemson and Auburn early in the season. Shaquille Morris had 24 points and nine rebounds and Austin Reaves added 20 points for the Shockers (17-5, 7-3), who have dropped three of five. Alston, who was just 5 of 22 from the field, made a driving layup in traffic with 6.8 seconds left in regulation. Zach Brown then missed a corner 3 for Wichita State as time expired. The Shockers led by as many as 12 points in first half, but nine second-half turnovers and Temple's inspired play produced a comeback, with Alston tying it with a fadeaway with 2:15 left. Morris barely beat the shot clock with a shot in the lane on the ensuing possession. But after an empty possession by each team, Alston delivered. Temple entered with an odd resume -- just a game above .500 and yet ranked No. 44 in the RPI -thanks to a brutal schedule and several quality wins. And the Owls gave the Shockers all they could handle, despite Morris' big night. The rugged big man eclipsed 1,000 career points in the second half and his dunk with 2:19 left in overtime made it 79-74. Wichita State, which tumbled in the rankings after consecutive losses last month, didn't score again despite 47-37 rebounding edge.
WINGS BATTLE IN DIVISIONAL RUMBLE BUT FALL TO KOMETS February 12, 2017 KALAMAZOO, MI— It was a vintage edition of the Kalamazoo Wings and Fort Wayne Komets rivalry, but it was the visiting Komets that escaped with a 5-3 win on Sunday at Wings Event Center. In classic fashion between the Wings and Komets, it was a physical affair in the opening period, highlighted by up-tempo play and numerous chances. While on their second man advantage try of the game, Fort Wayne took the game’s first lead after Kyle Thomas smashed a trickling puck into the goal for his 23rd of the season. Five minutes later, the Komets added to their lead while carrying in on a two-on-one. Thomas lifted the puck along to Jamie Schaafsma, who was on the back door to chop the puck past Kalamazoo netminder Joel Martin. After earning their third power play of the game, the Wings finally broke through the Komets defense and lit the lamp. Kyle Blaney flung a backhand saucer pass to Kyle Bushee, who snapped a one-timer that carved through a web of bodies in front of the goal and beat a screened Garrett Bartus. Early in the second period and on yet another man advantage, Kalamazoo pressured but were answered by Bartus. After a stunning save by the Komets’ goalie, the long rebound was stretched ahead to Travis Ewanyk who, having just left the box, carried in on a breakaway. Ewanyk’s shot on the uncontested chance flew past Martin and gave the Komets a 3-1 lead. Less than a minute after Ewanyk’s tally, Kalamazoo drew back to within a goal. Josh Pitt floated a flawless pass to Justin Taylor, who held the puck patiently and saw a window above the glove of Bartus. Taylor roofed a backhander for his team-leading 22nd goal of the season. On their seventh power play try of the game, Kalamazoo tied the game at three after Lane Schiedl crashed through the traffic and to the front of the goal. Kyle Bushee’s shot was slowed down by the Komets’ defense, but Scheidl followed the play and one-touched a backhander into the top corner of the net for his 18th of the year. The third period was a bruising frame, as Kalamazoo and Fort Wayne traded punishing checks and scoring opportunities. Late in the period, the Komets were on the receiving end of a fortuitous bounce and earned what was the eventual game winner. Thomas slid the puck from an impossible angle, and it caromed off the skate of Martin into the goal, pushing the Komets ahead, 4-3. With time ticking away and Martin on the bench for an extra attacker, Thomas capped off his hat trick with an empty net goal, closing the door on a potential comeback for Kalamazoo.
