Tim Merlier was crowned 'King of the Sprinters' yesterday, but today is a perfect opportunity for Mark Cavendish to knock him off his perch with a bunch sprint stage from Redon to Fougères. The finish is identical to the one used on stage 7 of the 2015 Tour de France, a day where Mark Cavendish rocketed to a 25th career stage win ahead of his arch-rival André Greipel. Both men will be back this year and given their electric form on the run up to the race we could see either one of them roll back the clock in Fougères and take a special win. Day two will see the puncheurs go toe-to-toe once again, this time on a ramp that has made an appearance at three of the last 10 editions of the Tour - the infamous Mûr-de-Bretagne. It’s not quite as long as the previous day’s climb to the line, at just 2km, but with an average gradient of 7% and leg-breaking 12% ramps near its base, the Mûr is a lot tougher and could even bring some explosive climbers, like Pogačar, Roglič and Carapaz, into the mix. The race kicked off with a stage that, looked like a perfect opportunity for a rider like Julian Alaphilippe or Mathieu Van Der Poel to take yellow. The elevation profile shows that there isn’t a flat road in sight between Brest and Landerneau on this testing first stage. Over the course of the 198km-long route the riders will be faced with 3,200m of climbing and no less than six categorised ramps - a rather rude awakening to a race that’s known for easing riders in slowly.
