COMOROS entered their first Africa Cup of Nations tournament this winter, upsetting the odds with qualification. Comoros have stunned the footballing world after qualifying for the last-16 of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations - despite the current edition of Africa's most prestigious competition being the first in their history. Currently sat at 132 in the FIFA World rankings, Comoros have only ever competed in the COSAFA Cup, which pits all the teams in southern Africa against each other. Expected to finish rock bottom of their group stage proper, little to no people had hopes for the country consisting of under one million people. Yet their incredible 3-2 win over Ghana proved crucial to their campaign - and the Coelacantes have moved to the last-16 as one of the four best third-placed teams. A 1-0 loss to Gabon in their opening fixture looked as though it would set a precedent for the tournament. This was followed by a 2-0 loss to Morocco, although Gabon's last minute equaliser against Ghana meant that the side knew they would qualify with win over the 'Black Stars'. And that they did in a pulse-raising game against Ghana, going 2-0 up and surrending the lead before an 85th-minute winner by hero Ahmed Mogni. Their best finish in that competition was in 2019, where they reached the quarter finals after drawing with Eswatini and Mauritius before being knocked out by Zimbabwe. Host Cameroon was the first team through to the knockout stages at the African Cup of Nations after coming from behind for the second time in two games to overwhelm Ethiopia 4-1 on Thursday. The Indomitable Lions have indeed proved to be difficult to subdue, and captain Vincent Aboubakar scored another brace against Ethiopia to take his tally to four goals at the tournament. Lyon forward Karl Toko Ekambi also got two for Cameroon, which hit the post three times and could have really embarrassed Ethiopia at Olembe Stadium in Yaounde. Yet, Ethiopia’s Dawa Hotessa Dukele had stunned the Olembe Stadium into silence with the opening goal in the fourth minute as Cameroon was caught out. Hotessa raced into position to meet a cross by Amanuel Gebremichael and expose a big hole in Cameroon's defense. Cameroon shook off that blow, just as it did to come from behind to beat Burkina Faso 2-1 in the tournament opener on Sunday with two penalties from Aboubakar. This round 16 tie between Cameroon and comoros will be their third meeting as they first met in the qualifications series in 2019 of the afcon qualifiers with Cameroon winning the first leg 3 goals to nil and drawing the second leg one one.
