Considering the first match of this men's T20I series at Kingsmead on Sunday was lost in its entirety because of the weather and Tuesday's game at St George's Park was curtailed after the skies leaked again that's no small thing. Cricket minded fans of the electrical thunderstorms that grace the Highveld during South Africa's summers and there are many would concede that the match must take precedence over even the epic show the weather puts on in Johannesburg. With both teams playing only four more T20Is before the World Cup in the format in the Caribbean and the United States in June they need all the gametime they can get. Many of the players involved will turn out for a host of T20 franchises before the World Cup but nothing polishes on-field and dressingroom dynamics like playing together. It's what turns collections of cricketers into teams who win tournaments. On the admittedly scant evidence of the Tuesday when South Africa won by five wickets with seven balls to spare. The home side are tightening those nuts and bolts better than the visitors. Neither side handed down a masterclass in a match that was messy from start to finish but one of them found ways to win while the other lost their way. Maybe India are still getting over last month's rude awakening at the ODI World Cup which around 1.4-billion people seemed convinced they had some divine right to win. Until they didn't and Australia did because sport doesn't work that way. The South Africans haven't had to face that challenge no-one expected them to come home with the World Cup. Indeed they performed better than anticipated to reach the semis. That's not to read too much into the last game of a rubber India can no longer win. Besides they have claimed only two of the 15 bilateral series they have played in South Africa across the formats. But one of those was a T20I series in February 2018. Gerald Coetzee South Africa's most successful bowler on Tuesday with a haul of 3/32 has been taken out of the mix (see below) and Shamsi whose Gqeberha economy rate of 4.50 was easily the best in both attacks might be less effective on a Wanderers pitch. So theoretically the Indians have a better chance of winning than on Tuesday. Also the Wanderers is the only regularly used international ground in South Africa where India haven't lost more matches than they've won. They're level at 5-5 in Joburg. But the South Africans know how to win at the Wanderers where they have been victorious in 65.98% of their matches regardless of format in which a positive result has been reached. Only in Centurion are they more successful on that score and just 0.29% more. For all its reputation as a fast bowler's venue the Wanderers is a good place to bat especially in white-ball cricket. So will Suryakumar Yadav celebrate retaining the top spot in the T20I batting rankings with an innings as bristling with aggression as his 36-ball 56 on Tuesday? Will Rinku Singh convert his unbeaten 68 off 39 in the same match into something bigger? Or will potential debutants Nandre Burger and Ottniel Baartman again see below deny them by announcing themselves in style? As always before a match questions hang in the air like rain clouds. That's better for cricket of course than real rain clouds hanging in the air. What to expect: A willing pitch a small fast outfield and little chance according to the forecast of rain. Shubman Gill might make way for Gaikwad who didn't play on Tuesday due to illness. Ravi Bishnoi looks set to crack the nod ahead of Kuldeep. Not for India fans. Their team defeated Australia 4-1 in a T20I series a week ago. Their team lost a World Cup final three weeks ago. What appears is that even if their team doesn’t have the likes of skipper Rohit Sharma Virat Kohli Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami for a series or two the crowd proudly wears the blue jersey to witness them play consistent cricket. India now face South Africa in a three-match T20I series beginning Sunday (December 10) at Kingsmead Durban. The second T20I will be played on December 12 at St George's Park Gqeberha while the third and final game is scheduled for December 14 at New Wanderers Stadium Johannesburg. In the absence of Rohit and the injured Hardik Pandya Suryakumar Yadav will be the stand-in skipper. It’s pertinent to mention that Suryakumar led India in the T20Is against Australia too. Shubman Gill who was rested for the Australia series is back in the mix. Both Rohit and Virat Kohli requested a break from the white-ball leg of the tour after a jam-packed three months. Ravindra Jadeja makes a return and so do Kuldeep Yadav and Mohammed Siraj. Jadeja is also named vice-captain for the series. India will know they need a complete team performance against South Africa who’ll be high on confidence after some dominating displays in the ODI World Cup. Kagiso Rabada and Temba Bavuma have been left out. Gerald Coetzee and Marco Jansen will miss the third T20I. The mentioned players aim to focus on the high-octane two-match Test series against India starting December 26. Lungi Ngidi who initially was part of the T20I squad for the opening two games has been ruled out of the entire series due to a left ankle sprain. Ngidi is being closely monitored. Skipper Aiden Markram Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller form a strong Protea middle-order. Meanwhile Anrich Nortje and Wayne Parnell continue to recover from their stress fracture and shoulder issue respectively. Both teams missing some key players may not be a bad thing because it will allow them to test those who are otherwise on the bench. Since the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 India have competed in six T20I series against five different opponents. They beat New Zealand (2) Sri Lanka Ireland and Australia but lost to the Windies. At the Asian Games India didn’t drop a game. The final against Afghanistan was washed out. By the virtue of being the top-seeded team India won the gold medal. After suffering a group-stage exit at the last year’s World T20 South Africa have played only two 3-match T20I series three games each against Australia and the West Indies. The Proteas suffered a 3-0 whitewash at the hands of Australia. The 2021 T20 World Cup champions while they lost 2-1 to the two-time winners (in 2012 and 2016) Windies. South Africa vs India 1st T20I Which team will come out on top? Cloudy with a chance of rain. The first game of the series is set to take place at the Village in Dublin. India are under a new captain and the squad is pretty much filled with IPL youngsters. On the other hand Ireland also have a fairly new skipper since the ICC World Cup Qualifiers 2023. So we are in a thrilling contest given the weather supports cricket rather than creating havoc. It has been very dark and consistent rainfall so far in the whole United Kingdom. A few of the England Domestic One-Day Cup matches have been delayed due to rain. There might be some rain intervals in the Hundred competition as well. Just as Niall John O'Brien tweeted from the venue or should I say around it it looks very much threatening for the game. It was raining earlier in the morning and it looks gloomy for the afternoon. Jasprit Bumrah is coming off a long injury break. He went through a successful back surgery in New Zealand. Then the recovery and rehabilitation at NCA in Bengaluru before getting fully fit for this tour and eventually being named the captain of the Indian set-up for the series. So Bumrah will be the first bowler to lead India in T20Is. The Indian fans wouldn’t want any further hiccups and hopefully no more injury worries for Bumrah. Paul Stirling will have a great opportunity to lead Ireland against a very young Indian side. He has done well in the recent tournament and led his team to the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 as Ireland have been qualified from the European Qualifiers. The Meteorological Department of Ireland have issued Yellow Alert for today and it would take something to get the match going. We might see a few debutants from India with the likes of Rinku and Jitesh in the squad. They would be hoping to replicate what Tilak Varma and Yashasvi Jaiswal have done when they made their debuts in West Indies. Toss Update: India won the toss and elect to bowl first. Rinku Singh and Prasidh Krishna have been given their T20I caps. Both will be making their debuts today. While it's Rinku's international debut it is Prasidh's T20I debut. At present it's not raining. The teams have begun the warm-up. The outfield is quite damp. Captain Jasprit Bumrah presents the debut caps to both Rinku Singh and Prasidh Krishna. The caravan has now moved on to Lauderhill in the USA for the final two games. After losing a couple of closely-fought games the Men in Blue put in a dominant performance in the previous game to keep the series alive. India’s talisman in this format Suryakumar Yadav soared high and played a blistering knock to help his side coast home. That's a strong finish from Odean Smith as the flexing of muscle helps him gain a six. The Windies end up with 178 runs on the board for the loss of eight wickets despite being in a nervy situation halfway through the innings. 57 runs have been belted away in the last five overs by the Windies batters. A six in the first over from Kyle Mayers was a compliment to the disdain character that the nature of the pitch inherited in Florida during the first innings today. Although Mayers' sparkle didn't last long as the introduction of Arshdeep Singh acted as the resistance to his flow. In the left-arm pacer's second over within the powerplay he also removed the other opener- Brandon King who was looking to accelerate. The home side could manage to gather 55 runs from the powerplay for the loss of two wickets. Nicholas Pooran was the one who arrived at the stage alongside Shai Hope and then the spectators got to witness a double strike in the 7th over. It was the Kuldeep Yadav enchantment that got the better of Nicholas Pooran and Rovman Powell in the same over. All of a sudden a good start was curtailed down to a tricky 57-4 as the scoreboard read. Shai Hope: "Yeah I thought we started well. We can speak on all possibilities. But we didn't do well in the middle. Good innings from Hettie (Hetmyer) and it was a good finish in the end. Probably 10 runs short. They bowled decently we lost a few wickets in the middle. Hetmyer came in and played positively from the get-go giving me some breathing space. Obviously want to go and go on to get a big one. But it's what it is. The home team West Indies surprised everyone by winning the opening two games and have a great chance now to seal a rare series win against India.
