David Robinson is one of the greatest athletes in American sports history. Standing at 7'1", with a wingspan that allowed him to dominate both ends of the floor, the Admiral was one of the most unstoppable weapons in NBA history. Robinson's agility and speed was incredible to watch. He possessed a rare combination of size, athleticism, balance, and skill that allowed him to run the floor like a guard, finish with authority at the rim, draw the D and dish the rock to an open teammate, or drill a pull-up jumper with consistency. Defensively, his lateral quickness, timing, uncanny ability to quickly get off the floor multiple times, and exceptional leaping ability made him an elite shot-blocker, capable of altering the game's tempo by deterring opponents from attacking the paint. As a rebounder David Robinson was quick to the basketball and used sound technique. Robinson's footwork was exemplary; he could hedge and recover on pick-and-rolls, switch onto smaller players with ease, and was a master of verticality, challenging shots without fouling. His defensive IQ was reflected in his ability to anchor a defense, communicate switches, and provide help-side defense. Mr. Robinson's Neighborhood was a tough neighborhood to dominate in. (For younger fans, that's a reference to the Nike ads.) Technically, David Robinson's abilities were exceptionally polished. He excelled in every offensive role he undertook. Whether facilitating as a point center or contending in the paint against formidable opponents like Shaq and Hakeem, Robinson performed at an elite level. His performances were consistently top-tier, with scarcely few subpar showings. While Robinson's most impressive achievements and games are often celebrated, identifying games where his negative plays led to Spurs' defeats is a challenging task. Among all historically dominant centers, Robinson stands out for the rarity of his mistakes on the court. David Robinson was also one of the most selfless players ever, sacrificing the later years of his prime, stepping aside as the lead Spurs player, so Tim Duncan could take the lead role & develop as a future champion.
