2022 F1 Mexican GP race analysis by Peter Windsor
With his win in Mexico, Max Verstappen becomes the first driver ever to win more than 13 races in one season. Red Bull were pushed hard by Mercedes around the high-altitude circuit, but in the end it was Verstappen's management of the medium-compound Pirelli tyre - and his resilience under intense pressure - that made the difference. Even so, Lewis Hamilton finished a resounding second after neatly passing his team-mate, George Russell, at the third corner, and Russell recovered to finish P4. Sergio Perez, a national hero in Mexico, also passed Russell on the opening lap to take the lower place on the podium. It was a bad day for Ferrari, with Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc finishing only fifth and sixth - but Daniel Ricciardo put in the best drive of his season so far to finish in P7 after a long race to the finish on the soft Pirelli tyres. El Gran Premio de la Ciudad de México (CDMX) 2022 de Fórmula 1 ha sido, desafortunadamente, aburridísimo. El Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez mostró de nuevo una afición mexicana espectacular, que recibió con brazos abiertos a la F1 y a su querido Checo Pérez que ansiaba con una victoria en su tierra, México. Pero una vez más, la carrera no ha estado a la altura de los aficionados. Desde la salida hasta el podio, no hubo acción, ni variedad estratégica ni absolutamente nada. Muchos equipos pecaron de precavidos con la estrategia, algunos pilotos no se atrevieron con ciertas maniobras y los bostezos convirtieron la F1ESTA del GP México, en la siesta. Sergio Pérez con su Red Bull consiguió alcanzar el podio, pero fue una experiencia más agridulce que el podio del año pasado al tener más expectativas. Fernando Alonso tuvo que abandonar por un nuevo problema de motor cuando estaba siendo el mejor del resto, y Carlos Sainz lideró a una Ferrari totalmente desaparecida. La Fórmula 1 nos brindó un carrerón en el Gran Premio de EEUU 2022 en el Circuito de las Américas, pero la FIA volvió a ensombrecerlo. Cuando parecía que la competición volvía a ser la protagonista, los de camisa volvieron a estropearlo. Y ya está bien. Tuvimos un fin de semana sin polémicas, con una de las mejores carreras de la temporada y sin duda la mejor en USA tras el batacazo de Miami... pero no podemos irnos a dormir tranquilos. La sanción a Fernando Alonso no tuvo ningún tipo de sentido. El asturiano, tras su accidente con Lance Stroll, su futuro compañero de equipo, pudo dar la sorpresa y remontar hasta la séptima posición. Pero la Federación se pasó tres pueblos y le sancionó con 30 segundos por algo que no sancionó hace tres años, habiendo catalogado el coche como legal y rectificado una hora y media más tarde. Nadie da crédito.
