Lakers Fall To The Suns In Preseason | Malik Monk Continues To Improve | Melo Debuts With Lakers The Los Angeles Lakers faced the Phoenix Suns in Game 2 of the preseason but lost 117-105. The scoreline looks more respectable than the game actually was because the Suns breezed through L.A. after the first three quarters. Phoenix led 102-74, but L.A.’s bench won the fourth quarter 31-15 to cut into the deficit. LeBron James, Russell Westbrook, Trevor Ariza and Dwight Howard didn’t play, and Devin Booker didn’t play for Phoenix. Carmelo Anthony and Anthony Davis, however, did make appearances, with the former making his debut in the purple and gold. It wasn’t pretty for the Lakers until Talen Horton-Tucker and Malik Monk picked up the pace towards the end of the third quarter, even though it wasn’t enough. Here are three takeaways from the game: Continuity matters With the Lakers bringing in 11 new faces for the guaranteed roster, it was logical that the players wouldn’t gel immediately. That was extremely evident against the Suns, which deployed the same starting five from the playoffs a year ago. The Suns didn’t look like it missed a beat, even with the acquisitions of JaVale McGee and Landry Shamet. Finding chemistry fast will be a key aspect for any success the Lakers hope to have, as the difference in continuity and chemistry manifested. Having LeBron James and Russell Westbrook may accelerate the process, but it still needs to happen quickly. Small-ball lineups need to rebound better The Lakers were once again out-rebounded by the opposition. Phoenix won the rebound battle 52-40, and 12 of those came on the offensive glass for the Suns; for comparison’s sake, the Lakers managed just four. Rebounding plagued the Lakers against the Brooklyn Nets, but in this game, much of it came down to the small-ball lineups. With who L.A. had out, L.A. frequently deployed lineups comprising one big and four smaller players. DeAndre Jordan grabbed seven in 20 minutes, but he missed plenty as well by ball-watching. The smaller guards also have to do better at boxing out and following up on any missed shot. Malik Monk shines again After leading the Lakers with 15 points against the Nets, Malik Monk dropped a game-high 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting (4-of-7 from deep). The shooting guard battle is headed in Monk’s favor at this point, but he still has plenty of work to do on defense. Cameron Payne and others usually had no issue blowing past Monk on dribble-penetration drives, but Monk’s scoring prowess can’t be overlooked. DeMarvion Overshown on the Texas football win over Louisiana & the overall UT defensive performance. Texas Longhorns beat Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns 38-18 on Saturday at Darrell K. Royal (DKR) Texas Memorial Stadium. It was Steve Sarkisian's debut as the head coach at the University of Texas and his team did not disappoint. The Texas defense played extremely well under new defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski. While they gave up a few big plays on the ground to the Ragin' Cajuns, it's difficult in modern college football to hold a team under 20 points, which is exactly what the Texas Longhorns defense was able to do. DeMarvion Overshown was all over the field on Saturday against Louisiana. Overshown had 13 tackles and 0.5 sack vs. Ragin' Cajuns. Overshown told Serenity Douglas of Orangebloods.com that there has been a lot of talk throughout fall camp about hte Texas defense, but it was finally great to show people the potential of this defense based on how they played vs. Louisiana. Overshown also mentioned that they aren't overlooking Arkansas even though the Razorbacks barely got by Rice week 1 of the college football season. "I look past it, because I know once they see us and the rivalry and the stadium is packed out and you know they hate Texas' guts." DeMarvion also mentioned the mentality of coach Steve Sarkisian and Sark telling the Texas football team to play loose: "I'm giving you permission to cut it loose. The Detroit Lions vs. the Indianapolis Colts just took place and many observations were seen for the play on the field for week 3 of the NFL preseason. Who were the standouts in the game making plays for the Detroit Lions? Who were the players who did not do well for the Lions? MicroMike breaks down all the action from week 3 of the Lions preseason. I’m not afraid to say it. He’s not a starting caliber quarterback right now, but maybe he can be someday. I’m just blown away by his play this summer. Or maybe I’m Bloughn away? Okay, that was dumb. Still, Blough is looking really nice this summer, and he more than likely earned himself the number two spot on the depth chart on Friday. Even though Blough threw pick in the fourth quarter, he’s done enough to overlook that. It was Blough’s grit going head first into the end zone with Colts defenders draped all over him that likely had Dan Campbell in his feelings. RB3 will be the hardest spot to predict Who would have thought that this would be an issue for the Lions? They have too many decent running backs and not enough roster spots. Godwin Igwebuike, Jermar Jefferson and Craig Reynolds have all looked good during the preseason, and on Friday they made Duce Staley’s job even harder when they all continued to look good yet again. Coming into the game I wasn’t completely sold on Jefferson. I thought this would be Reynolds’ spot when it was all said and done. Then Jefferson showed off some nice moves including this pretty hurdle. Igwebuike made a case for himself as well by not only showing off his speed in the backfield but in the return game too. Man, this going to be a tough decision. Penei Sewell looked rough early, but rebounded Sewell got beat off the line early in the game and Lions fans revolted against my concern that the first round pick has not been all that great. Look, I get it. I’m a Lions fan too. I’ve been protective of the team and their decisions before. The fact is Sewell is struggling with the transition. It doesn’t mean he’s a bust, it means he’s going to take some time to come along. Everyone relax. However, his agent Guido Albers is still confident that his player could make it this season : Albers also stressed that he does not expect Donny to endure a similar treatment as the previous. Speaking to Telegraaf “Everyone within the club knows that Donny cannot have another season like last year.In preparation, clarity would be provided about his role. The fans had already embraced him before, but the most important thing is that the trainer has now provided clarity in the English press.We are happy with that.
