Petes' Tye Austin Named OHL Goaltender of the Week
Toronto, Ont. - The Ontario Hockey League today announced that Tye Austin of the Peterborough Petes is the OHL Goaltender of the Week after winning a pair of games while posting a 2.50 goals-against average and .923 save percentage. Austin recently returned from injury and turned aside 60 of the 65 shots that came his way last week. He made 19 saves in Thursday's 5-3 win over the visiting North Bay Battalion, snapping the Troops' four-game winning streak in Mason McTavish's return to the Petes lineup. Austin provided a season-high 41 saves in Sunday's 3-2 win over the Ottawa 67's, earning first star recognition as the Petes were outshot 43-29, earning their third straight win. A 19-year-old from Pembroke, Ont., Austin missed a month of action with a shoulder injury, returning to the Petes' lineup on November 18th. The 6-foot-6, 200Ib. netminder is 3-2-0-0 with a 3.83 goals-against average and .888 save percentage in six games this season. Selected by the Petes in the third round (43rd overall) of the 2018 OHL Priority Selection, Austin owns a career mark of 14-16-0-1 with a 4.16 goals-against average and .877 save percentage through 42 career regular season games in maroon and white. Also considered for this week's award, last week's recipient Ben Gaudreau of the Sarnia Sting was strong once again, going 1-1-0-0 with a 2.03 goals-against average and .937 save percentage in two games. London Knights goaltender Brett Brochu was kept busy, making 113 saves over three outings. Knights’ Antonio Stranges Named OHL Player of the Week
Toronto, Ont. – The Ontario Hockey League today announced that Dallas Stars prospect Antonio Stranges of the London Knights is the OHL Player of the Week, scoring three times while adding four assists for seven points over three contests. Stranges posted three consecutive multi-point performances as the Knights took five of a possible six points last week. He tied the score late in the third period of London’s 4-3 overtime loss to the Guelph Storm on Tuesday before posting two assists in Friday’s 7-4 win over the Soo Greyhounds, picking up a helper on Max McCue’s second period game winning goal. Stranges finished off the weekend with a season-high three points, scoring a pair of goals in a 7-4 road win over the Erie Otters on Saturday. He collected a primary assist on Cody Morgan’s deciding goal in the third period before tacking on insurance just over three minutes later. A 5-foot-11, 188Ib. left-winger from Plymouth, Mich., Stranges has 10 points including three goals and seven assists through his first eight games of the season. Now in his third OHL campaign, Stranges has recorded 84 points (35-49–84) over 135 regular season games since joining the Knights as a second round (21st overall) pick in the 2018 OHL Priority Selection. He made his professional debut last season, recording an assist during a nine-game stint with the AHL’s Texas Stars, top affiliate of the Dallas Stars who selected him in the fourth round (123rd overall) of the 2020 NHL Draft. Also given consideration for this week’s recognition, Kingston Frontenacs forward Lucas Edmonds posted seven points including a goal and six assists over three games, earning first star honours in Saturday’s shootout win over the Mississauga Steelheads on CBC. Frontenacs' Shane Wright Named OHL Player of the Week
Toronto, Ont. - The Ontario Hockey League today announced that top 2022 NHL Draft prospect Shane Wright of the Kingston Frontenacs is the OHL Player of the Week, leading the League with eight points including three goals and five assists over three contests. Wright put up three multi-point showings on home ice, beginning with a goal and an assist in a 3-2 overtime loss to the Mississauga Steelheads on Wednesday. The Frontenacs came up short again on Friday, but Wright scored his fifth and sixth goals of the season while going 20-for-32 in the faceoff circle as the North Bay Battalion took a 5-4 decision. Wright's Frontenacs battled back into the win column on Sunday as he recorded a career-high four assists in a 6-5 overtime win against the Peterborough Petes. Wright gathered an assist on Lucas Edmonds' OT winner, extending his current point streak to five games. A 17-year-old native of Burlington, Ont., Wright sits third in Frontenacs scoring with 16 points (6-10--16) through 11 games. Named both OHL and CHL Rookie of the Year as an exceptional status talent in 2019-20, Wright helped guide Canada to IIHF World Under-18 Hockey Championship gold this past May in Frisco, Texas. He was selected by the Frontenacs with the first overall pick of the 2019 OHL Priority Selection after leading the Don Mills Flyers to an OHL Cup championship. Wright becomes the first Frontenacs player to win the weekly honour since Brett Neumann last did so in December 2018. Also considered for the award this week, Guelph Storm forward and reigning Player of the Month Sasha Pastujov helped his club play to a 2-1-0-0 mark, climbing to the top of OHL scoring with seven points (2-5--7) over three games. Toronto, Ont. - The Ontario Hockey League today announced that Guelph Storm rookie Jacob Oster is the OHL Goaltender of the Week with a pair of wins, a 1.50 goals-against average and a .942 save percentage. Oster stopped 49 of the 52 shots he faced over the weekend, first denying 35 of 36 in a 2-1 Storm road win over the Sarnia Sting on Friday. He was back in the crease on Sunday afternoon at home to the Kitchener Rangers, earning first star honours with 14 saves in a 4-2 victory. A 17-year-old from Ottawa, Ont., Oster is 3-1-0-0 with a 2.52 goals-against average and .906 save percentage in four games this season. The 6-foot-3, 187Ib. netminder was Guelph's fifth round (92nd overall) pick in the 2020 OHL Priority Selection from the Kemptville 73's U18 program. Greyhounds' Rory Kerins Named OHL Player of the Week
Toronto, Ont. - The Ontario Hockey League today announced that Calgary Flames prospect Rory Kerins of the Soo Greyhounds is the OHL Player of the Week with a league-leading 10 points including five goals and five assists over three games including a plus/minus rating of plus-3. Kerins got the week started with a four-point performance on Wednesday night as the Greyhounds defeated the visiting Sudbury Wolves 4-3 in overtime. Kerins scored twice, tying the game with a third period power play marker before collecting an assist on Tye Kartye's game winner. His dominance carried over into Friday's home date against the North Bay Battalion as Kerins posted a career-high six points including his first OHL hat-trick as the Hounds outgunned the Troops 8-5. Kerins' six points were the most by a Greyhounds player in a single game since Nick Cousins recorded six on Feb. 16, 2013 against the Kingston Frontenacs. Kerins was held off the scoresheet on Saturday as the Hounds fell to the Battalion 4-2 on home ice. The 5-foot-11, 186Ib. centreman was an impressive 68 percent in the faceoff circle last week, winning 51 of his 75 draws. A 19-year-old from Caledon, Ont., Kerins is currently tied for the OHL lead in scoring with his 14 points (8-6--14) over eight games. His 61.8 percent success rate in the faceoff circle is third among centremen with at least 100 faceoff attempts this season. Kerins was a sixth round (174th overall) pick by the Calgary Flames in the 2020 NHL Draft and made his pro debut with the organization last season, appearing in four games with the AHL's Stockton Heat. The Greyhounds selected him with their fourth round (71st overall) pick in the 2018 OHL Priority Selection from the Mississauga Rebels U16 program. Kerins becomes the first Greyhounds player to earn the weekly honour since Morgan Frost last did so from Jan. 14-20, 2019. Also considered for the award this week were San Jose Sharks prospect Danil Gushchin of the Niagara IceDogs who finished the week with nine points including five goals and four assists over three contests. Gushchin's first career OHL hat-trick headlined an IceDogs win over the Barrie Colts on Thursday. Knights' Brett Brochu Named OHL Goaltender of the Week
Toronto, Ont. - The Ontario Hockey League today announced that London Knights netminder Brett Brochu is the OHL Goaltender of the Week with three wins, a 2.55 goals-against average and a .923 save percentage. Brochu helped the Knights improve to a League-best 5-0 record with back-to-back wins over the Windsor Spitfires before edging the Sarnia Sting in a shootout on Saturday. He turned aside 35 of the 38 shots he faced in a 4-3 Thanksgiving Monday shootout road win over the Spitfires, stopping seven of eight Windsor shootout attempts. Brochu was up to the task on Friday when the Knights played host to the Spitfires, making 32 saves in a 5-1 win while drawing an assist on Max McCue's first goal of the season. He wrapped up the weekend making 29 saves in a 5-4 overtime road win over the Sarnia Sting, none bigger than a game-saving overtime denial that led to a Sean McGurn game winner in transition. A 19-year-old from Tilbury, Ont., Brochu leads OHL netminders with five wins on the season while posting a 2.49 goals-against average and .922 save percentage. He's won 14 consecutive regular season games dating back to Feb. 14, 2020, part of a stretch in which he's won 27 of 28 decisions since Dec. 29, 2019. The 6-foot, 176Ib. Brochu was a member of the OHL's first all-rookie team during the 2019-20 season, leading the League with a 2.40 goals-against average to win the F.W. Dinty Moore Trophy. His 32 wins that season set a new Knights franchise record for rookie goaltenders. The former sixth round (114th overall) pick in the 2018 OHL Priority Selection made his professional debut with the AHL's Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in 2020-21, appearing in one game on May 16, 2021. Also meriting consideration for the award this week was Ottawa Senators prospect Leevi Merilainen of the Kingston Frontenacs who played to a 2-0 mark while recording a 2.50 goals-against average and .912 save percentage. Generals' Calum Ritchie Named OHL Player of the Week
Toronto, Ont. - The Ontario Hockey League today announced that rookie forward Calum Ritchie of the Oshawa Generals is the OHL Player of the Week with a league-leading seven points including four goals and three assists over three games along with a plus/minus rating of plus-4. The second overall pick of the 2021 OHL Priority Selection, Ritchie helped the Generals take wins in two of three games last week. The 6-foot-2, 178Ib. centre started with a goal and an assist in a 7-3 road loss to the Ottawa 67's on Thanksgiving Monday. The Generals were back in the nation's capital on Friday and this time came away with a 4-1 win as Ritchie scored midway through the third period. He saved his best performance for last, recording two goals and two assists in a 6-3 win over the visiting Peterborough Petes on Sunday night. Ritchie becomes the youngest Generals player to record four points in a single game since Michael Dal Colle did so back on Nov. 4, 2012. His five-game goal-scoring streak brings him in line with John Tavares, who accomplished the feat in the month of January 2006 during his exceptional status rookie season. A 16-year-old native of Oakville, Ont., Ritchie's six goals tie him with teammate Ryan Stepien for the League lead. He sits two points back of Sudbury's Jack Thompson for the OHL lead in points, registering nine (6-3--9) through five games. His 28 shots on goal are the most in the OHL, and his 116 faceoffs are tied for second in the League. Ritchie is a graduate of the Oakville Rangers U16 program, a team he captained before being chosen second overall this past June. Ritchie becomes the first Generals player to claim Player of the Week honours since Philip Tomasino last did so from January 6-12, 2020. Other Player of the Week candidates included Calgary Flames prospect Jack Beck who posted four goals and two assists over three games as his Ottawa 67's went 2-1. Soo Greyhounds winger Cole MacKay also recorded six points (2-4--6) as the Soo Greyhounds took four of a possible six points on the road.
