John Tavares (NHL) Head INJURY | Was it MANAGED Correctly? | Doctor Explains!

Toronto Leafs captain John Tavares was taken off the ice on a stretcher following a dangerous hit to the head. This unfortunately occurred in game one of the Toronto Maple Leafs vs Montreal Canadiens NHL play off series. He fell first by a hit from Ben Chiarot. As he was down, he took a knee from Corey Perry, and this was the hit that unfortunately did him in. However, the more pressing matter was the fans reactions to how the situation was handled and if the trainer provided appropriate care. Two acute injuries you don't want to miss in this case are head injuries (skull fracture, intracranial bleeds), and cervical spine trauma (fractures). Either of these, if bad enough can cause lasting neurological damage, and even death. In the context of first responder care of an athlete with a dangerous head hit, we try out best to keep them on the ground and to avoid having them stand up as seen with Tavares. The trainer in this case did his best to stabilize the spine, however, in an ideal world, Tavares would have been kept on the ground, on his back until they were able to board him. While the c-spine is being stabilized, other individuals are responsible for checking the ABC's. These include: airway, breathing, and circulation. Lastly, once the player is safely boarded and taken off the ice, it would be important to put on a c-spine collar and do a quick neurological exam to determine if there was any neurological compromise. BuskerFest Soiree with Tristan Thompson, Jully Black and more.

An exclusive VIP Busker Soiree shook up the downtown streets of Yonge on August 13th. The Toronto International BuskerFest for Epilepsy returns in just a few days for another electrifying year! All in support of Epilepsy Toronto, the soiree was held at the charming Aperture Room and OTSN was there to take in all the exquisite events the evening had to offer. We spoke with NBA Basketball star, Tristan Thompson, Canada’s Queen of R&B Soul, Jully Black and Toronto’s Mayor John Tory. The Busker Soiree was produced by internationally acclaimed designers, Glen Peloso & Jamie Alexander and featured the exceptional cuisine of Oliver & Bonacini. When Epilepsy Toronto established Buskerfest in 1999 the idea was simple - create dynamic entertainment while raising funds and public awareness of epilepsy. The neurological disorder affects over 40,000 Torontonians and Epilepsy Toronto is committed to improving the lives of these people through support groups, employment support, counseling and programs. The Night is ‘Yonge’ Busker Soiree was an event unlike any other and served as a gentle tease to the upcoming Toronto International Buskerfest taking place August 27th– 30th. Be sure to catch the last major festival of the summer all in support of Epilepsy Toronto!
