Zo schaatste Bart Swings naar olympisch goud op de massastart
Oppermachtige Bart Swings snelt naar goud in eindsprint Vier jaar geleden in PyeongChang haalde Bart Swings zilver achter de Koreaan Lee, zijn reactie toen: "In Peking ga ik voor goud." Als skeeleraar is de masssastart hét favoriete nummer van Swings. Hij is de nummer 1 van de wereldbeker dit seizoen in de discipline. In zijn halve finale vanochtend was hij goed bij de les en plaatste hij zich zonder problemen voor zijn grote afspraak. De Rus Zacharov had die als een van de favorieten gemist, maar met Chung en Lee, de Amerikaan Mantia en de Nederlandse anciens Bergsma en Kramer was er nog volk genoeg in het oog te houden. De tactiek van Swings voor de race van 16 ronden was duidelijk: niemand laten wegrijden om zijn kansen in de sprint te kunnen gaan. Onze man in het geel draaide in het begin alert als 3e rond en reageerde als enige op alle aanvallen. De Japanner Tsuchiya probeerde het herhaaldelijk, telkens met de Oostenrijker Odor. Bergsma lanceerde Kramer, maar Swings dichtte - als enige - alle bressen. Op 8 ronden van het einde zette Swings zich op kop. De snelheid ging de hoogte in. Good old Sven Kramer gooide er nog maar eens een stevige demarrage uit, maar Swings zag het gevaar. Ook voor een laatste duootje Tsuchiya-Bergsma haalde de 31-jarige Belg de kastanjes uit het vuur. De bel voor de laatste ronde klonk en Swings' rivalen lachten al in hun vuistje voor de krachten waarmee Swings gewoekerd had. Maar die tankte vandaag uit een bodemloos vat vol energie. Hij zat goed in tweede positie achter titelhouder Lee en werkte zich in de laatste bocht langs de buitenkant naar voren. In de laatste rechte lijn was het hard tegen onzacht, maar Swings knalde Lee voorbij en hield Chung en Mantia onweerstaanbaar af. Hij won met een meter voorsprong en klopte zich met recht en reden op de borst. Voor het zilver en brons was een finishfoto nodig: Chung pakte zilver, Lee brons. De Amerikaan Joey Mantia, de vriend van shorttrackster Hanne Desmet, viel net naast het podium. Swings is de eerste Belg die 2 keer op een olympisch podium staat, hij bezorgt België de eerste individuele olympische titel in de geschiedenis van de Winterspelen. Het is nog maar het 2e goud voor België na dat van kunstschaatsers Micheline Lannoy en Pierre Baugniet in het paarrijden in 1948.

The Alonso video kinda kicked things off for Driver61. He would drive in a deliberately horrible style, inducing massive understeer - heating up the famously hard-wearing Michelins to then give him grip on exit. Then there’s Schumacher - he drove the car very hard into the corner and rotated it mid-corner. This meant that he was [actually slower] mid-corner - but he more than made up for it on the entry and with a brilliant exit. —- But, now if you look at Verstappen vs Hamilton - the way they drive the car is remarkably similar. Honestly, go watch some onboards! [After this obviously - I would LOVE to include them here, but we’re not allowed.] So what’s up with that? Have they just cracked the secret to driving? Or is it the cars that mean everyone drives so similarly now? —- Well, let's look back at Senna. Over his time in Formula 1 - he drove a lot of different cars. All of which needed driving differently, so he always needed to adapt to the car.
