Why Ferrari and Mercedes are the only teams not copying Red Bull's F1 car
Nothing thatâs happened in F1 testing has dented Red Bullâs status as pre-season favourite in 2023. It set an ominous pace over the three days in Bahrain and once again looks like the car to beat. What testing has done is prove that main rivals Ferrari, which looked quick over a lap but struggled more over long runs, and Mercedes, which battled balance problems, are determined to go their own way with their cars. Other than Mercedes and Ferrari, almost every team in F1 has edged more in the direction of Red Bullâs concept â save for Haas, which is locked into a more Ferrari-esque style owing to their shared components. Thatâs because Red Bull is F1âs most successful car and, presumably, because those teams have evaluated Red Bullâs ideas back at their factories and seen enough to make them believe itâs the right way to go for these still-young ground effect regulations. So why are Mercedes and Ferrari so convinced that their alternative approaches are going to work? How Red Bull can fight F1 cost cap verdict after being found guilty
The FIA has officially confirmed that Red Bull overspent and breached Formula 1âs cost cap regulations during Max Verstappenâs first title-winning season in 2021. But the much-anticipated announcement from the governing body contained no details of the exact nature or precise scale of the breach, and said the penalty was still being discussed. Ferrari and Mercedes have made very clear they believe the laptime value of even whatâs officially classed as a âminorâ breach would be considerable, and have already called for âsevereâ action long before the official announcement. But Red Bull refuses to back down. Not only does it remain adamant it came in under the cost cap for 2021, it has promised to follow the FIAâs processes to challenge the outcome, and hasnât ruled out taking further action if necessary.
