With Ferrari's Charles Leclerc banished to the back of the grid for the Canadian GP (due to engine-change penalties), the pressure was off as Red Bull's Max Verstappen headed into qualifying for Sunday's Canadian GP. Except that it rained. And anything can happen in the wet. Showing his class, though, the World Champion perfectly prosecuted all three segments of qualifying to take the pole by the margin of 0.7sec - not from Ferrari's Carlos Sainz but from 40-year-old Fernando Alonso, who dazzled all day in the blue-and-pink Alpine-Renault. Sainz duly qualified third - ahead of Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton, who watched his team-mate, George Russell, slide onto the grass on slicks in the closing minutes - and the two Haas-Ferrari drivers, Kevin Magnussen and Mick Schumacher. It was - you might say - a qualifying session with a difference, as Peter Windsor details in this video. Ferrari is the team with the most storied history in F1 and it remains a dream team for many drivers. However, there have been a few iconic drivers to have never driven for Ferrari. Lewis Hamilton is the most successful driver in F1 today and many consider him the greatest of all time, and he too has never driven for Ferrari Link to poll: https://www.youtube.com/post/UgkxBqOQvyxT1tF-FAnYXXNT8ZnlHKyN_7NF 0:00 - Hamilton Reveals Chances Of Becoming A Ferrari driver 1:00 - Fast Feed I'm your host Dillon Shelley and first up on Formula World: Hamilton Reveals Chances Of Becoming A Ferrari driver Hamilton, in an interview with Corriere, was asked if he would ever drive for Ferrari In response, he pointed out his tattoo and said “Do you see what is written here? ‘Loyalty’” He further elaborated by explaining that Mercedes is his family “Of course it would have been nice to race for Ferrari during my career, but things happen for specific reasons” “Mercedes is my family, I will always be a Mercedes driver, as was Stirling Moss” He concluded by adding that he is a Ferrari fan “If I could sit down with the fans, I would support Charles Leclerc. I'm a Ferrari fan” Fast Feed Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko stated that “as things stand, we can’t prove anything and we won’t go after it” [Motorsport Total] “We don’t see Aston Martin as a direct competitor of ours” “What you can’t prove in black and white, you should leave alone” Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto acknowledged that “the winning strategy [in Monaco] would have been to stop Charles [Leclerc] one lap after [Sergio] Perez, instead of two” [Corriere] “Or to stay out with the rain tyres and switch to slicks” “If someone finishes fourth while he was in the lead, something is wrong” Haas driver Kevin Magnussen feels that Baku is “a beautiful circuit and very unique with the long straights and slow corners” [Team Statement] “Engine power is very important and we have a good engine” “There is always a lot of action in Baku and the risk of yellow flags or a safety car is high. It always feels like there are more chances in Baku than in the average race” Alfa Romeo’s Zhou Guanyu conceded that of “course it was quite up and down the last few races” [Formula Rapida] “But in general I feel very happy and it is very nice to be here” “I think at the moment I’m just going to try and focus on getting myself up to speed and getting the team double points places” [Team Statement] Haas team principal Guenther Steiner pointed out that “it’s a long trip [to Azerbaijan] and the team is working very hard to get it all done” “If you have any damage on the car, it gets more difficult so we’re hoping to not have any damage in Baku” Would you like to see Lewis Hamilton drive for Ferrari?
Red Bull’s Max Verstappen signed the longest active contract on the current F1 grid that will see him stay at Red Bull until 2028. Some have questioned whether Red Bull will stay competitive for that long and if they don’t, what can Max do? Team advisor Helmut Marko has revealed the answer to Formel 1 Link to poll: https://www.youtube.com/post/UgkxozfnGmUoiPKtIcYykY-G4tS5PiJMdnyB 0:00 - Does Max Verstappen’s New Deal Include An Exit Clause? 1:12 - Fast Feed I'm your host Dillon Shelley and first up on Formula World: Does Max Verstappen’s New Deal Include An Exit Clause? Red Bull are likely to have a new engine partner by 2026 Marko started off by explaining why Max’s long contract will play a big role in that “Max is an important link in the chess game. It is not surprising that manufacturers take this into account” “It was therefore important for Red Bull to be able to say that we have committed the best driver to our team until 2028” “If you have someone like Max in the ranks, it has a positive effect on the rest of the team and the team partners” He then opened about any progress regarding a future engine partner “It’s all still open. It makes sense that we are the most attractive partner for manufacturers” He signed off by revealing if Max has an exit clause in his contract “If Red Bull experiences a kind of ‘crash’, just like in 2014, then there is, of course, an escape clause” Fast Feed Alpine’s team principal Otmar Szafnauer has revealed that he “didn’t have the influence [he] thought [he] should have [at Aston Martin] with Martin [Whitmarsh] coming in” [GP Fans] “I had a contract, I had no reason to leave. Had the responsibilities not been taken away from me, I would have stayed” Haas team principal Guenther Steiner pointed out that “In 2020 [Kevin Magnussen] had a tough year” [F1] “He was quite demotivated at the end of it, and when you are out of it, it’s like ‘whoa, I wish I was there even with a bad car.’” “But now he’s back and the first race was very good for him; he equalled his best result with Haas on his first race back. So, I think he matured quite a bit” Red Bull’s Sergio Perez stated that “with Max I have a very good relationship” [Marca] "We are more similar than people think. Formula 1 is not everything” “We have a life outside the sport and that's why we have respect for each other and a good relationship” Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto explained that “it’s not just a matter of when [upgrades] will be ready but a matter of budget caps” [F1] “Making sure we are not spending all we have got in the first races” “We are not expecting significant upgrades for the next race in Melbourne, but as soon as we can bring something, we will do it.” When asked if he would be open to a biopic, Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton stated that a “documentary is the current focus” [Motorsport Week] “If your story can have one positive impact even on one person or one family that could be amazing” “So yeah, maybe one day” Will F1’s budget cap play a decisive role in the development race this season?
Haas couldn’t have hoped for a more dramatic turnaround of its Formula 1 fortunes under the new regulations in 2022. After scoring just three points in the previous two campaigns, it has already racked up four times that in first two races thanks to back-to-back top 10 finishes for Kevin Magnussen in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. That’s put it fifth in the constructors’ championship with more points than it has scored in the preceding 49 races. So how did Haas achieve this remarkable reversal of fortunes, and can F1’s smallest team really be expected to sustain this form for the rest of the season? #F1 #Haas Subscribe: http://the-race.com/youtube_subscribe Website: http://the-race.com/ Twitter: @wearetherace Instagram: @wearetherace Facebook: http://facebook.com/wearetherace Podcasts: http://the-race.com/podcasts Thanks for watching - please like, share and comment, please also hit subscribe to show your support so we'll keep doing what we're doing. https://www.the-race.com http://www.twitter.com/wearetherace
