Ma sappiamo bene che ci sono tante altre squadre che non sono riuscite a raggiungere nemmeno il penultimo scalino verso il paradiso. Per esempio, il Bari. Bari è la città italiana più grande a non aver mai partecipato alle Coppe Europee. 317 mila abitanti, uno degli snodi commerciali più importanti del Mediterraneo, ma mai una qualificazione: miglior piazzamento in serie A, un settimo posto nel 1947. Qualche volta ci aveva anche provato, per esempio all'inizio degli anni Novanta, quando aveva speso oltre dieci miliardi per portare in Italia un ottimo giocatore come David Platt, stella dell'Inghilterra ai Mondiali di Italia '90: era finita con un'incredibile e amarissima retrocessione in serie B. Da quel momento la proprietà dei Matarrese aveva deciso di non fare più il passo più lungo della gamba, non volendo più andare, nella migliore delle ipotesi, oltre una monotona permanenza nella colonna di destra della classifica. Il Bari è una delle squadre yo-yo per eccellenza del calcio italiano, una lunga serie di promozioni e retrocessioni e poi ancora promozioni e retrocessioni. Non ha mai avuto una vera “stagione da Dio”, al massimo una lunga serie di giornate e serate di grazia da raccontare ai nipotini. Questo è il grande cruccio dei tifosi baresi, a cui sono sempre state negate le emozioni provate da piazze più piccole, che so, Parma, Udine, Vicenza, Bergamo... Eppure, almeno per una notte, freddissima e caldissima insieme, dalle “finestre” del San Nicola – lo stadio-astronave di Renzo Piano – sembrò spalancarsi il mare di un futuro diverso. Manca una settimana a Natale, all'ultimo Natale del secolo. È il 18 dicembre 1999, un sabato sera. Strade intasate dallo shopping pre-natalizio della città più “milanese” del Sud Italia. Come diceva quel film degli anni Ottanta con Massimo Boldi e Teo Teocoli: “Si ringrazia la regione Puglia per averci fornito i milanesi”. A volte però è vero il contrario, nel senso: ci sono anche dei milanesi che a Bari ultimamente si trovano molto male. Parliamo dell'Inter, che contro i pugliesi hanno perso tutte le ultime quattro partite di campionato: due a San Siro, due al San Nicola. Con esiti anche nefasti per la classifica finale come per esempio nella stagione 1997-98, che è passata alla storia come il campionato del duello con la Juve, lo scontro Ronaldo-Iuliano, eccetera, dimenticando che la Juve ha vinto lo scudetto con cinque punti di vantaggio sull'Inter, uno in meno di quelli che l'Inter ha lasciato al Bari: sei su sei. Nelle sfide Inter-Bari il mondo spesso e volentieri si è rovesciato: il sudafricano Phil Masinga si è scoperto molto più efficace di Ronaldo, che nella sua stagione d'esordio ha dovuto subire a San Siro la spietata marcatura del marocchino Rachid Neqrouz. Altri giocatori qualunque sono diventati incubi, come lo svedese Osmanovsky o la sconosciuta ala destra Gianluca Zambrotta, pescato al Como, in serie C, dal direttore sportivo Carlo Regalia. Ma la sera del 18 dicembre 1999 le distanze sembrano un po' più nette: intanto l'Inter si è riassestata attorno al miglior allenatore italiano degli ultimi cinque anni, Marcello Lippi, e a una campagna acquisti faraonica che ha portato in nerazzurro Angelo Peruzzi, Christian Panucci, Laurent Blanc, Gigi Di Biagio, Vladimir Jugovic, l'esterno sinistro greco Georgatos e dulcis in fundo il centravanti più forte del mondo, Bobo Vieri. Viene da una sconfitta immeritata in casa della Juventus ma è in piena corsa per lo scudetto, staccata di cinque punti dalla coppia Lazio-Juve.
