Arizona's second game of the season couldn't have gone much better as the Wildcats used a few big run to pull away and eventually earn a 54-point win over UT-Rio Grande Valley on Friday night at McKale Center. The Wildcats played through their bigs and starting center Christian Koloko and starting power forward Azuolas Tubelis combined for 38 points and 20 rebounds in the win against an undersized Vaqueros squad. The UA duo spoke with reporters about the game while head coach Tommy Lloyd explained why he was caught off guard by the end result Friday. Follow us! For the first time at McKale Center in front of fans, Tommy Lloyd was able to see his team go to work against an opponent Monday night. Arizona hosted Eastern New Mexico in what will be its lone exhibition ahead of next week's season opener, and the Wildcats came away with a dominant 96-50 victory over the Greyhounds. UA returners Benn Mathurin and Christian Koloko shined in the game while newcomers such as Justin Kier and Kim Aiken Jr. also contributed in the victory. Lloyd, Koloko and Kier all spoke with reporters after the matchup to give their top takeaways and discuss where the team goes from here heading into the official start of the season. Follow us! The Arizona men's basketball team opened the Tommy Lloyd era with a 96-50 exhibition win over Eastern New Mexico on Monday, Nov. 1 in Tucson. Five different Wildcats scored in double figures as the Wildcats shot 50 percent as a team. Bennedict Mathurin led the way with 18 points. Christian Koloko, Kim Aiken Jr., and Justin Kier had 14 points apiece.
Oregon State found ways to hang around with Arizona throughout the night Thursday, but eventually a couple runs late in the game helped the Wildcats pull away. The Beavers challenged Arizona, but UA's ability to control the rebounding battle and make trips to the free-throw line cleared the path for the team's 14th win of the season. Center Christian Koloko, wing Bennedict Mathurin and head coach Sean Miller took some time to discuss the 70-61 victory Thursday night. Follow us! Pac-12 Networks' Matt Muehlebach and Ted Robinson breakdown the action from Arizona men's basketball's 88-74 victory over Colorado on Monday night in Tucson. As he often has this year, junior James Akinjo led the way for Arizona (7-1) with 22 points and eight assists. It was far from a one-man show however, as four other Wildcats (Jermari Baker, Jordan Brown, Christian Koloko, and Terrell Brown) scored in double figures. Evan Battey's 18 points were a bright spot for Colorado, but it was not enough as the Buffs fell to 6-2 on the season.
Arizona did not make a 3-pointer in Saturday's 69-61 win over UTEP, but the team made 25 free throws to help seal the victory. Point guard James Akinjo had 14 of the free throws as he was perfect from the line. He spoke about his night after the game while big man Christian Koloko recapped his role in the team's fifth win over the year. Follow us!
