Emile Smith Rowe capitalised on a Chelsea mistake to score the only goal of the game, and extend our winning run in the league to three games. Having scored his first ever Premier League goal at the weekend against West Brom, he netted again in the derby to set us on the way to a hard-earned three points. This goal owed a bit more to good fortune though, as he stroked home from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's pass, once Chelsea keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga had scrambled back to prevent an own goal. For much of the rest of the game it was about resolute defending, right from the front back to our five-man defence. That was the system Mikel Arteta went for from the start, but it was the most central of those three centre backs - Pablo Mari - who was caught in possession early on to gift Chelsea the first chance of the game. Kai Havertz nicked the ball off the Spaniards toes to race away on goal, but he blazed over when one-on-one. It was Chelsea's turn to hand out the gifts next though, and it led to Smith Rowe scoring the only goal of the game. Jorginho's wayward backpass put Kepa in difficulty. The keeper managed to palm away from his own goalline, but Aubameyang was lurking to pull the loose ball back to Smith Rowe in front of goal, and his low shot squirmed in off the post. Rob Holding made a superb close-range block from Mason Mount's shot to keep us ahead, but Chelsea kept knocking on the door for the remainder of the half, drawing two smart stops from Bernd Leno. The hosts continued to pin us back at the start of the second half, and we had to remain organised in and around our own penalty box. Christian Pulisic did have the ball in the net, but the goal was disallowed for a clear offside after VAR intervened. Hector Bellerin was introduced and immediately had a sight of goal, but shot tamely after good build up play involving Martin Odegaard. We were certainly coming out of our shells as an attacking threat now, with Odegaard himself blazing over from a promising position. Chelsea - three days before their FA Cup final appointment with Leicester City - piled forward late on and hit the woodwork twice in succession in injury time. But we were rewarded for an excellent defensive effort with a 1-0 win, securing our first double over Chelsea since 2003/04. #arsenal #emilesmithrowe #premierleague Enjoy match highlights, training and behind the scenes to get closer to the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, David Luiz, Vivianne Miedema, Nicolas Pepe, Alexandre Lacazette, Leah Williamson, Bernd Leno, Danielle van de Donk, Willian, Hector Bellerin, Jordan Nobbs, Bukayo Saka, Kim Little, Gabriel Martinelli, Thomas Partey and more. Three fine goals from Emile Smith Rowe, Nicolas Pepe and Willian saw us claim a 3-1 victory against West Bromwich Albion on Sunday. After the disappointment of our European exit on Thursday night, Mikel Arteta’s side were expected to deliver a response here – and they did just that. But it took some time to get going, and in fact it was the visitors who twice went closest in the early stages through the dangerous Matheus Pereira. Gradually we began to assert our dominance, and when we upped the tempo the Baggies struggled to live with us – especially down our left flank, where Bukayo Saka took centre stage. The England international was playing out of position at left back – not that you’d have known it - and on the half-hour mark it was no surprise that our opening goal was created by him. After being played in by Willian following patient build-up play, Saka looked up and picked out the onrushing Smith Rowe, who had raced into the box and volleyed in on the run with his left foot. It was a lovely strike, but there was even better to follow just five minutes later. This time the goal stemmed from an attack up the right as Calum Chambers – enjoying another eye-catching display – fed Pepe, who cut inside and curled a sensational strike into the top-left hand corner. It was a high-class goal, and no more than our dominance deserved – and we had further chances to add to our advantage before the break through Gabriel Martinelli, Chambers and Saka. We continued to pile forward after the interval, with Pepe and Smith Rowe both testing Sam Johnstone early on, while a fine Saka cross not long afterwards just evaded Martinelli and Smith Rowe. But out of the blue, the Baggies pulled one back when Pereira raced at the heart of our defence and fired a low shot beyond Bernd Leno and into the far corner. The goal offered the visitors hope, and we had some nervy moments during the closing stages. But in the 90th minute, Willian stepped up to curl a free kick into the top corner to wrap up the win, open his account for the club and relegate Sam Allardyce’s side in the process. #arsenal #emilesmithrowe #nicolaspepe #willian #premierleague Enjoy match highlights, training and behind the scenes to get closer to the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, David Luiz, Vivianne Miedema, Nicolas Pepe, Alexandre Lacazette, Leah Williamson, Bernd Leno, Danielle van de Donk, Willian, Hector Bellerin, Jordan Nobbs, Bukayo Saka, Kim Little, Gabriel Martinelli, Thomas Partey and more. Goals in each half helped us get back to winning ways in a dominant performance at St James' Park. Mohamed Elneny's first-ever Premier League goal gave us an early lead and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, making his first start for a month, made sure of the points from Gabriel Martinelli's cross. The first goal - on five minutes - was our fastest in the Premier League so far this season. Martinelli had already sent in one cross for Aubameyang in a positive opening, and with our next attack we found the net. A wonderful pass from David Luiz found Hector Bellerin on the right. His cross wouldn't fall for Aubameyang, but the half-clearance fell straight to Elneny on the edge of the area, and his shot was too hot for Martin Dubravka to handle. We've seen the Egyptian score some great goals in European football, but this was his first in the league - on his 66th appearance in the competition. And it was just reward for a bright start to the game from the Gunners. #arsenal #aubameyang #elneny Enjoy match highlights, training and behind the scenes to get closer to the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, David Luiz, Vivianne Miedema, Nicolas Pepe, Alexandre Lacazette, Leah Williamson, Bernd Leno, Danielle van de Donk, Willian, Hector Bellerin, Jordan Nobbs, Bukayo Saka, Kim Little, Gabriel Martinelli, Thomas Partey and more. Folarin Balogun has committed his future to us by signing a new long-term contract with the club. The 19-year-old striker, who signed as a scholar in July 2017 having been at the club since he was nine years old, has continued his impressive development this season, making his first-team debut and scoring his first goals at senior level. Known as Flo among his team-mates, the academy graduate has scored twice from his six first-team appearances this season, with both goals coming in the Europa League group stage, away at Molde and Dundalk. The New York-born striker, who has represented both the USA and England at youth level, has also continued to make an impact in our academy this season, scoring eight goals from his 18 appearances in the PL2 and EFL Trophy. #arsenal #balogun #folarinbalogun Enjoy match highlights, training and behind the scenes to get closer to the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, David Luiz, Vivianne Miedema, Nicolas Pepe, Alexandre Lacazette, Leah Williamson, Bernd Leno, Danielle van de Donk, Willian, Hector Bellerin, Jordan Nobbs, Bukayo Saka, Kim Little, Gabriel Martinelli, Thomas Partey and more.
