The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is mulling two matches at neutral venues for each franchise in the 10-team IPL 2022. The idea was floated by some state associations at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Kolkata after the Indian board asked them to develop infrastructure for which the BCCI would help financially. However, when some state associations pointed out that they don’t get enough matches. To maintain the infrastructure, the idea of playing two IPL matches at neutral venues was proposed. It will help generate revenue while also the infrastructure will be maintained. “A small association hosts international games every three or sometimes four years. The BCCI wants each association to build their own stadium and infrastructure. A few state associations argued that they have built stadiums and are not getting any competitive games. It will be better if the BCCI decides to have IPL games in these smaller venues too so that they can get some revenue at the same time generate interest,” a BCCI official told Indian Express. As the flamboyant all-rounder wants to concentrate on white-ball cricket and IPL, he has informally informed the BCCI about his desire. But he is yet to make an official announcement. Junior Pandya last played a Test match back in 2018 in England and since then he has been out of action in Test cricket. He is also not being considered for the South Africa Tour. “He has been struggling with injuries for a while and although he hasn’t informed us officially, he is considering Test retirement. It will help him keep his focus on white-ball cricket. He was anyway not in our plans for Tests. It will be a great loss for sure but we have to prepare backup,” a top BCCI official told InsideSport. One major factor in the championship this year is the cost cap and this can be especially difficult for teams whose cars suffer a massive crash. Exceeding the cost cap of $145 million can result in penalties such as point deductions, race bans, and even exclusion from the championship. Any one of these can be catastrophic for a team like Red Bull which is involved in a very close battle with Mercedes for the 2021 championship.
