He became the Ruler of Qatar on October 24, 1960 upon the abdication of his father. The stadium, situated in one of Qatar's most historic cities, was open during the Amir Cup final which was attended by the Amir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani on Qatar National Day and exactly two years before the country hosts the FIFA World Cup final. The Amir Cup final between the two Qatar Stars League clubs Al Sadd and Al Arabi was attended by 20,000 spectators with 50% of the available seats allocated to people who have previously contracted the Corona virus in which Al Sadd emerged victorious 2-1.
