Five times in fact since 2000. But only the great Australian team of 2004 had the legs to see an early lead to a series win. That's how hard it is to keep throwing punches in these conditions without copping them back with interest. Even in this decade of impregnability India have found ways to overturn early deficits. In Bengaluru they produced a clinic in attractional bowling. Four years later in Chennai they went the other way and raged on a raging turner. And so on to Vizag 2024 where the hosts will be out to convince the rest of the world that their facade is not in fact fraying and that they simply don't lose consecutive home Tests well not since 2012 anyway. But time is what it is and Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid now have to protect a proud record with a squad that has fewer Test runs. Joe Root and where Ravichandran Ashwin is both the highest wicket-taker and second-highest run and century maker. The captain-coach pair seek quick solutions while colliding head-on with a team that has spent the last 18 months running on an irresistible quantum of jeopardy and the last few weeks. Sweeping any rotating red spherical object out of sight. Lest it is lost in the afterglow it is worth remembering that India were still India in Hyderabad just a little less super-sharp. They led by 190 and had chances that they didn't take. In the end they were done for by what was in many ways a knock for the ages. It'll be interesting to see how they play in the follow up. Imitation however subtle will both be a hat-tip and an acknowledgement of shedding inhibitions. However should they lose the toss again and find the pitch to be similar India will ask for better control from their bowlers and more enterprise from their batters as well as the captain. For the second time in two years Rohit has been properly challenged at home with the marker for the series this time laid down very early. What happens next is a tantalising prospect. Both players are good against spin but Patidar might seem to be ahead in the pecking order by virtue of being called up to the squad earlier to replace Virat Kohli. India The hosts have several ways to go about making up for the double blow of losing KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja. It is certain that at least one of Rajat Patidar or Sarfaraz Khan will debut in the middle-order. The team management did their best to keep the identity and the number of debutants under wraps with both contenders batting even in the optional net session the day before the game. England Jack Leach will miss the Test with a knee injury and tall off-spinner Shoaib Bashir the visa issues behind him will replace him in the XI. James Anderson was at his menacing best in the nets two days out from the game and has been picked as the sole seamer in the XI in place of Mark Wood. What to expect: Spin but not of the extreme kind. Last time when India went down to England in Chennai they produced rank turners. But the absence of four all-time greats from the team might call for a more measured approach. This one is a black soil wicket with a smattering of dried grass to bind it. The two Tests played at this venue have been characterised by the slightly old-school subcontinental slow burn progression before culminating in fifth-day jeopardy which is how this one could also go unless the warmer temperatures aid faster disintegration. You would think that India have their noses ahead right now but you never know on these type of surfaces. India are 95/3 at the end of 29 overs and still require 136 runs to win this Test and go 1-0 up in the series. India got off to a steady start to the chase. The English bowlers bowled tight lines and lengths with the new ball and didn’t allow the hosts to get away. Yashasvi Jaiswal and skipper Rohit Sharma took their time to settle in. Both put 42 between them before Jaiswal flicked one straight to Pope at short leg to fall on 15. Tom Hartley removed Shubman Gill on a silver duck in the same over as the hosts suddenly found themselves in a spot of bother. KL Rahul joined his skipper at the crease. Rohit played some lovely strokes and put the pressure back on England. Another gripping session of Test cricket. Just when the partnership was starting to blossom Hartley struck for the third time by trapping the Indian skipper on 39 in front of the stumps. Axar Patel was promoted up the batting order to number five. The decision is paying off for the hosts as he has displayed good technique and held the innings nicely. He along with Rahul have kept the visitors at bay and taken India to tea at 95/3. They require 136 more to win this Test match. There is enough assistance to the spinners and England can still hope of defending this total. They will have to bowl consistent lines and lengths in the evening session to create chances. England on the other hand have been pretty solid with their tactics but they did let it slip in the last half an hour of the session. Tom Hartley seems to have let go of all the jitters from the first innings and bowled brilliantly as he picked all three wickets. Jack Leach also bowled a few overs and looked good but they still need to keep their focus and look to take wickets as the runs will keep on coming sooner or later. the Test match is nicely poised at the moment where both the teams have a chance to emerge victorious. India still needs 136 runs to win and England needs 7 wickets before that. Time is no factor in this match as there is one full day left tomorrow. The Final session of the day is coming up which is definitely going to keep all of us on the edge of our seats as this session can determine where the result is going to fall on this 1sy Test of this series between England and India. Joe Root did bowl well in patches but Ben Stokes would have liked a bit more from him. Axar who has been sent up the top order has done a fine job as well. Session Summary: 29 overs 95 runs and 3 wickets. Another riveting session of Test cricket has gone by and at the end of it India still need 136 runs to win with 7 wickets in hand. England looked to be in control of that session for a long time but India have managed to pull it back nicely with an unbeaten stand of 32 runs between KL Rahul and Axar Patel. For India it wasn't the best of starts as Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill both fell in the same over in the first half an hour or so and then the skipper was also undone by Tom Hartley. Rahul though ha taken his form from the first innings and hasn't let that dropped catch of Ollie Pope bother him too much. Chasing 231 the Indian openers were quite watchful unlike the first innings. Rohit was dropped on 5 but he batted more positive than Jaiswal. Hartley who was taken to the cleaners in his opening spell in the first dig bowled beautifully. He bowled in the right spots exerted pressure and nipped out India's top three. Audio Content Disclaimer For This Content This is self-created content and not copied content. Jadeja (45* off 68) and Srikar Bharat (9* off 37) will resume in 20 minutes with India leading by 63 runs. Rehan chipped straight after the luncheon interval removing the unsettled Shreyas Iyer for 35 with Jadeja joining forces with KL Rahul to take India into the lead. The left hand batter was also given out on field but the first successful referral in this Test saw him survive. The batters changed gears and batted in aggressive manner bringing up the 50-partnership in 51 balls. Rahul hit 8 fours and 2 sixes in his knock with the couple of sixes hit in a single over taking India into the lead. Rahul was dismissed soon after the drinks interval as he attempted a rash stroke and perished. KS Bharat batting at 7 joined Jadeja with the duo looking composed in their partnership of 21 runs. There was no bat involved and the Ultra Edge confirms it. Rehan accounted for Iyer and Tom Hartley for Rahul the only 2 dismissals in the afternoon session. Despite England managing to scalp 2 crucial wickets including the prized dismissal of KL Rahul who threw his wicket to Rehan Ahmed at 86 the partnership between Jadeja and Bharat has injected stability into the Indian innings. After the tea break England awaits the arrival of the second new ball due in the next 4 overs. England will be poised to utilize it to their advantage in a bid to make further inroads. The upcoming session promises to be pivotal in shaping the trajectory of the Test match with both teams eager to gain ascendancy. Session Summary: 26 overs 87 runs and 2 wickets. As the players take a well-deserved break for tea on Day 2 of the first Test match between India and England the stage is set for a captivating finale to the session. India finds themselves at 309/5 after 76 overs in the second innings holding a slender lead of 63 runs. Ravindra Jadeja batting on a composed 45 is accompanied by KS Bharat who stands firm on 9 not out. With the likes of Ravichandran Ashwin and Axar Patel yet to come India harbours aspirations of building a substantial lead of over 200 runs a target that seems not all that out of reach at this juncture. Excellent decision from Paul Reiffel. This session - 26 overs | 87 runs | 2 wickets. England started well after lunch. They conceded just 2 runs off the first four overs and Rehan had Shreyas Iyer caught at deep midwicket. India responded in style. They counterattacked and put the England spinners under pressure. India got into lead and the Rahul-Jadeja duo stitched a brisk 65-run stand. KL became the fifth Indian batter to get out playing an aggressive stroke. He pulled a half-tracker from Hartley straight to deep midwicket. Post that Jadeja and Bharat batted conservatively and ensured that there were no further setbacks in the session. While the left-hander has been solid the latter has looked a bit tentative. India are 63 runs ahead and with 5 wickets in hand they'll eye a pretty big lead. Hammered through the leg side. 82.5 kph. Bharat pulls in front of square picking up the googly well. Gets the boundary to the left of deep midwicket. Root invited Bharat hit and he obliges. A long hop pitched on middle and leg. Some good amount of bounce but no pace on it. Bharat rocks back and pulls it square of the wicket. Hits it up over the man at square leg to find the fence. Jadeja pulls off the backfoot and plays it wide of short fine leg. No chance for any fielder to chase the ball down. Fifty for Jadeja. Gets there in 84 balls and brings out the sword celebration. In fact they've lost just three Tests (two vs Australia and one vs England) in India during that period. That's an incredible record. Ashwin and Jadeja - the spin twins - have made the visiting teams dance to their tunes. The two experienced tweakers unsurprisingly are once again expected to dominate proceedings. They will be up against an England side that's playing an exciting brand of cricket. Under Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum England haven't lost a Test series and they've featured in a lot of memorable Test matches. So will 'Bazball' work against the Indian spinners in Indian conditions? Can England's inexperienced spinners be as effective as their counterparts? One thing is for sure this is going to be a cracking Test series. Hello everyone and a warm welcome to the first of the five Tests between India and England. England in 2012 were the last team to register a Test series win in India. Alastair Cook & Kevin Pietersen batted brilliantly and the England spin duo of Graeme Swann & Monty Panesar outbowled the Indian spinners to register a famous come-from-behind series win. Joe Root and Ravindra Jadeja made their debuts in that series and they've come a long way. Root is currently the second highest run-getter for England in Tests and he has an impressive record against India. He also has a Test average of 50.10 in India. Being England's best player of spin the No. 4 has a big role to play in the series. Playing fearless cricket and being positive from the word go has been the characteristic of Bazball and they certainly won't change their approach in this series especially with the bat. They've already named their playing XI which features three spinners. The left-arm spinner Jack Leach will be back in action after six months. Leggie Rehan Ahmed is just one-Test-old. And Tom Hartley another left-arm orthodox spinner will be making his Test debut. Can they trouble the Indian batters? India failed to conquer their final frontier as they lost the Boxing Day Test in Centurion but they won the New Year's Test in Cape Town inside two days to square the series in South Africa. They are back home and India will start as firm favourites. For the first time in over 12 years the Indian batting line-up will have none of Virat Kohli Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane. Kohli pulling out of the first two Tests due to personal reasons would have made the selection call easier. Gill Rahul and Shreyas Iyer are expected to bat at three four and five and the hosts will pick a specialist wicketkeeper. In Ashwin Jadeja and Axar Patel not only do India have three top-class spinners but they are also handy batters lower down the order. Add Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj that's a formidable bowling attack in any conditions. KL Rahul is set to feature in his 50th Test match. Ravindra Jadeja is 6 wickets away from completing 100 international wickets against England. Pitch Report | Murali Kartik and Kevin Pietersen: It's a pitch of three parts. It has very dry edges close to the bat. It's a lot more dry on this side. Here it's going to turn. In the middle of the surface second part there's an even covering of grass but it's dry underneath. Dry patches in the middle of the wicket. To the other side of the wicket there's less dry patch closer to the bat. There's going to be a lot of spin. You win the toss and bat first. The spinners will come into play very soon. Joe Root is 30 runs away from becoming the highest run scorer in Tests against India.
