Um eine Überraschung zu schaffen, müsse Köln den "deutschen Messi" unbedingt "bändigen", forderte FC-Coach Gerhard Struber. Dies gelang den Gästen zunächst, nachdem die Partie aufgrund des Pyrorauchs aus dem Kölner Block in der Anfangsphase für fast zehn Minuten unterbrochen war. Der FC war es auch, der durch Damion Downs (15.) erstmals Gefahr ausstrahlte. Die Leverkusener, die in der Runde zuvor in München gewonnen hatten (1:0), benötigten einen Freistoß von Alejandro Grimaldo (30.), um zum ersten Abschluss zu kommen. Nur kurz nach seinem Lattentreffer hatte der Spanier erneut die Führung auf dem Fuß, der Ball rutschte knapp vorbei (34.). Aus dem Plus an Ballbesitz sprang für Bayer ansonsten wenig Torgefahr heraus. Die Kölner hielten in ihrem ersten Pokal-Viertelfinale seit 15 Jahren leidenschaftlich dagegen, agierten offensiv jedoch zu ungenau - bis Downs einen der wenigen Konter nutzte und für Ekstase im Kölner Block sorgte (45.+ 10). Mit einer Doppelchance eröffnete Leverkusen den zweiten Durchgang: Jeremie Frimpong scheiterte an FC-Torhüter Marvin Schwäbe, Wirtz verpasste knapp im Nachsetzen (51.). Bayer wurde für die Nachlässigkeiten bestraft, als Linton Maina (54.) den nächsten Konter eiskalt zum 2:0 für Köln nutzte. Bayer schüttelte sich nur kurz, die Antwort folgte prompt. Auf Vorarbeit von Wirtz verkürzte Patrik Schick (61.) aus kurzer Distanz - und läutete damit eine stürmische Schlussoffensive der Leverkusener ein. Erst tief in der Nachspielzeit glich Schick per Kopf aus (90.+ 6). Köln hatte in der Verlängerung nicht mehr viel zu bieten. Boniface, der vor einer Woche noch fast nach Saudi-Arabien gewechselt war, sorgte für den dritten Streich. Auch in der Verlängerung dominierte Leverkusen das Geschehen. Boniface (98.) sorgte fast schon folgerichtig für das 3:2 und verhinderte damit die Kölner Pokal-Sensation - auch weil der Treffer von Imad Rondic (112.) nicht zählte.
