Hunters halt Jets charge The Ipswich Jets made the trek to the Hunters’ home ground Kalabond Oval for their Round 13 game, looking for their first win at the ground. The Jets and Hunters clash brought together two in form teams, with the Jets having won five games in a row (and six away games in a row); while the Hunters had not lost at home all year. They were also chasing a club record of six wins a row. The Hunters had several changes with Henry Noki, David Lapua and Sebastian Pandia all out of the Hunters’ line-up, while for the Jets Liam Capewell, Brendon McGrady, Kurtis Lingwoodock and Gerico Cecil made way for Richard Pandia, Pat McCallum, Joe Ofahengaue and Chris Ash – meaning there were three Jets players on debut for this game. The match started well for the Hunters who in the fifth minute saw fullback Stargroth Amean slice through the Jets’ defence and over the line to get the Hunters up 6-0. The Jets pressed the Hunters’ line with attacking raids, but the Hunters held them out and seemed to gain confidence. It was the little half and captain Israel Eliab who came up with the big play after the Hunters had been defending; when on his own 30m line he received the ball and set off for the line on a 70m run that saw the Hunters out to a 10-0 lead. The Hunters’ scheming number 7 Ase Boas was keeping the Jets pinned down and controlling the game with his kicking game. However, it was a careless Hunter’s penalty that saw the Jets gain attacking momentum and Landon Hayes score his first Intrust Super Cup try. The Hunters were up 10-6 and the Jets had settled into the speed of the game when the Hunters pulled away again through Oti Bland Tony who got the Hunters to a halftime lead of 16-6. The Jets needed to start the second half well to get back into the game and they achieved this through a try in the 43rd minute to Hayes who was having a strong match. At 16-12 it was a tight struggle until Timothy Lomai found Brandy Peter with a nice short ball and the Jets couldn’t hold the Hunters who pulled away again 22-12. With 20 minutes to go, Eliab scored his second try to seemingly take the game out of the Jets’ reach at 28-12. Marmin Barba had other ideas and scored try number 17 for 2015 to keep the Jets in touch at 28-16. The Jets chipped away again at the lead when they scored with 10 minutes to go through Jets big bustling bench forward Billy McConnachie the score was now 28-22 and a dramatic finish was on the cards. The Jets’ Kurt Capewell used his footwork to beat Noel Zeming cold and score his fourth try of the year and it was now 28-28 with eight minutes to go. It was a hectic last eight minutes and the Hunters broke the game open when Adex Wera busted the Jets and scored a try in the corner to take the Hunters out to 34-28 with five minutes to play. The Hunters sealed the win with a try after Esau Siune broke the Jets once more and made a 30m run. He found Puara who got the ball onto Lawrence Tu’u to score and end the game with a score 40-28. The Jets will enjoy the week off this week while the Hunters will take on the Souths Logan Magpies at Port Moresby. The Easts Tigers returned home from Papua New Guinea with more than just the two competition points on the weekend. Tigers coach Craig Ingebrigtsen described the trip to Kokopo as an amazing "life experience". "I was rapt to get the points because it's a really hard place to go over and win at. But the biggest thing we got out of the trip was the respect for the local community. "We did the walk through the markets and it was a real eye opener to see how the rest of the world live." Without a number of front-liners, the Tigers lifted in the energy-sapping humidity to come away with a tenacious 22-16 victory at Kalabond Oval. Experienced trio Jacob Ling, Shane Neumann and Dane Hogan led the charge, while talented winger Jarrod McInally provided the finishing touches with two tries. Despite the oppressive conditions, the Tigers got "stronger and stronger" as the match wore on. PNG took a 12-10 lead into half-time, but Ingebrigtsen was always confident they could come out on top. "We defended really well and they got a little frustrated," he said. "We just sort of stifled their attack and got real good numbers in tackles. Even though we were down 12-10 at half time, I was really confident we could win." Easts have the bye this weekend, while the Hunters will travel to Cairns to play the Northern Pride at Barlow Park. A hard onslaught was expected for the Cutters this week as the PNG Hunters headed to Stadium Mackay for the very first time. The wet weather forced both sides to gruel through the mud and rain, with the Cutters aiming to climb out of their third last position in the Intrust Super Cup. Despite the determination of Mackay, the Hunters were not about to sacrifice their reputation without a fight. Putting immense pressure on their opponents, the physical size and power of PNG's front liners -- Sebastian Pandia, Wartovo Puara and Esau Siune -- easily matched that of the Cutters front three of Sam Hoare, Anthony Mitchell and Karl Davies. With physical strength looking equal, it was the Cutters ability to out-think their opponents that resulted in their roaring 20- 4 victory. Stepping off the plane just two hours before the game was due to start, the PNG Hunters had to take this disadvantage in their stride. Only three minutes into the first half however, their winger Garry Lo limped off the field, a shaky beginning for a team that usually powers off the start line. Fifteen minutes later, the Hunters lost Pandia to injury. The rest of the half only went further downhill for PNG, with Cutters winger and captain Liam Taylor scoring the first four pointer of the game after being on the end of swift offloads from Chris Gesch and Doug Hewitt. Wrapping up the first half for the Cutters, Mitch Day slipped through the gap scoring another four pointer for the defending premiers to lead 10- at the break. The second half went off with a bang with both sides showing even more brutality than the first half. The Cutters proved they were on their game with Taylor scoring his second try of the match out wide. The score sat at 14-0 with just half an hour of play left. Determined not to leave without making a mark on the scoreboard, Hunter George Benson was able to force his way through Mackay's seemingly rock solid defence, scoring with 16 minutes left in the game - but this would not be the last try of the night. Four minutes remained on the clock when the Cutters truly claimed the victory. Mackay's hooker Anthony Mitchell scored out of dummy half, diving beneath the goalposts and leaving the final score at 20-4. Cutters Coach Kim Williams was impressed with his team's defensive effort. "It was one of the best defensive efforts I've seen in my time here. Most teams play the Hunters and expect to come out second best in the physical side of it, but I think we muscled up and dominated them very strongly," Williams said. The PNG Hunters Coach Michael Marum was disappointed with the loss but thought Mackay's win was well deserved. "We lost three or four players in the first half, which I think changed the game around, our guys still defended well though, but full credit to the Cutters," Marum said. THE Norths Devils returned to the winners' circle yesterday putting on an impressive performance to hold out the PNG Hunters in their 32-24 win. One of the biggest crowds to be seen at Bishop Park in years was treated to an entertaining match, and it was the Hunters who were on the board first when Wartovo Puara crossed the line. However, from that point -- the rest of the running was with the Devils -- who scored the next four tries in an attacking blast that was difficult for the Hunters to handle. With the Devils surging out to a 22-6 lead at halftime -- Hunters fans at the ground were willing their side on, urging them to change their fortunes in the second half. The visitors responded and started well in the return from the break, and scored the first try in the second half, with a sweeping backline movement resulting in a try in the corner. Norths however did their best to stifle a potential comeback with another try -- before PNG ensured the crowd remained interested, with big prop Esau Siune charging over the top of Devils fullback Shaun Carney to plant the ball. The conversion was successful and the Devils' lead shrank to 26-18. Devils five-eighth Kodi Nikorima then scored his second try of the match after capitalising on some good play out wide from Lachlan Maranta with six minutes remaining in the match. The margin proved too big to overcome -- but it did not stop the Hunters from scoring one more entertaining try -- with winger Garry Lo finding a gap in the defence to run almost the length of the field to cap off a thrilling match. This weekend, the Hunters will travel to Gladstone to take on the CQ Capras at Marley Brown Oval, while the Devils will have the weekend off with the bye.
