ISL 2021-22, SF2 2nd Leg: Rock-solid Kerala pip Jamshedpur 2-1 over two legs to book final date
Kerala Blasters FC split honours with Jamshedpur FC on the night playing out a 1-1 draw, but rode on two top-draw defensive displays to pip the League Shield winners 2-1 on aggregate over two legs and qualify for their first final since 2016, in the 2021-22 Hero Indian Super League at the Tilak Maidan Stadium here on Tuesday. Adrian Luna (18th) opened the scoring for Kerala with a stunning goal before Pronay Halder (50th) pulled one back for the Red Miners who needed one more goal to take the game to extra time, but another solid performance by the Kerala backline ensured they held firm and confirm a place in the summit clash since their defeat to ATK FC six years back. In the first leg, Sahal Abdul Samad scored the only goal in a 1-0 win for Kerala who made it to their third Hero ISL final. They were the finalists in the inaugural 2014 edition as well. The yellow shirts started the second leg without the injured Sahal but showed no signs of slowing down, almost taking the lead inside the first two minutes had Alvaro Vazquez not tried to be cheeky when one on one with the keeper, dinking the ball over T.P. Rehenesh in Jamshedpur goal and wide of the far post. Four minutes later, Vazquez got possession deep inside his own half to then set up Ayush Adhikari but Rehenesh was alert to the danger, coming out of his line in time. Kerala found a lot of joy as Jamshedpur full-backs pushed forward leaving a lot of spaces for their rivals to exploit. Adhikari got another chance from a Jorge Diaz cross but Jamshedpur skipper Peter Hartley put his body on the line to snuff out the danger. Vazquez atoned for his miss earlier in the half soon after, flicking on a delightful pass from the left flank for Luna who darted in, dropped a shoulder and curled a side-footed effort past Rehenesh and into the right corner. After the cooling break, Daniel Chima Chukwu thought he had pulled Jamshedpur back in the game but his stab from close was ruled offside, albeit belatedly after keeping his flag down initially. Prabhsukhan Gill was then at fault in Kerala goal as he punched a Greg Stewart free-kick over his head with Jamshedpur players all surrounding him, but eventually, the referee blew the whistle for a foul, much to the keeper's relief. AT the break, Kerala led 2-0 on aggregate. Five minutes into the restart, Halder nicked one in to get Jamshedpur back in the game, poking in a Stewart corner which was initially met by Chima whose header lacked power and fell to Halder who netted from two yards out. One minute later, Vazquez could have all but sealed the tie for Kerala but Rehenesh was on hand to save from a chip after the Spaniard was one on one with him. The ball, though, kept rolling goalwards with Eli Sabia but the Brazilian did enough to clear it off the line. Kerala kept pushing for more as Marko Leskovic, brilliant at the back again, dragged a header wide while Jorge Diaz had Rahul KP free in front of goal but instead lobbed the ball over the keeper trying to score himself. We booked our place in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup after second half goals from Calum Chambers and Eddie Nketiah saw off the challenge of Leeds. Coming into the game off the back of a hugely-encouraging win against Aston Villa and ahead of a tricky clash at Leicester this weekend, it was no surprise to see Mikel Arteta shuffle his pack. There were nine changes to the team, with just Ben White and Emile Smith Rowe retaining their places – but most of the attention was focused on the bench, where Salah Oulad M'Hand was included for the first time. We made much of the early running in a tightly-contested first half, with Eddie Nketiah dragging a shot wide and Sead Kolasinac’s effort from a tight angle saved. But Leeds posed a real threat on the break, and had a clear sight of goal when Diego Llorente played a pinpoint ball over the back of our defence for Dan James to race in to, but Bernd Leno saved his shot. Our German goalkeeper then made an outstanding save to deny Jack Harrison, after the Leeds man took aim with a fierce shot at the back post, before Smith Rowe flashed one over at the other end. That was it for the first half, but after the interval we took the lead when Chambers – on for the injured Ben White seconds earlier – headed the ball over the line, and after a long pause, the goalline technology awarded it. We doubled our advantage when Nketiah – up against his former loan club – took advantage of an underhit headed backpass by racing on to it, lifting the ball past Illan Meslier and rolling it in for our second of the night. It was the striker’s seventh goal in eight Carabao Cup matches – for both us and Leeds. We suffered a narrow defeat in our opening Mind Series game, as fans returned to Emirates Stadium. There were more than 20,000 inside the stadium, our largest home crowd since March 7, 2020 when 60,000 packed in to watch us beat West Ham 1-0 in the Premier League. And although there were moments to cheer - Granit Xhaka's headed equaliser and Ben White making a goal saving block on his debut - we ended up on the wrong side of the scoreline. Roared on by the crowd - many of whom had waited a long, long time to be back - we made a flying start. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang got in behind the defence a couple of times. First he sent a cross just ahead of Emile Smith Rowe in the box, then set Kieran Tierney away with a neat back flick. After a lively opening ten minutes, the game began to settle down, and there were no real chances for either side before Chelsea took the lead, out of nothing. Timo Werner set up his compatriot Kai Havertz on the break, and the midfielder slammed his shot past Bernd Leno in the Arsenal goal. We went searching the equaliser, and nearly had it moments later - Smith Rowe was unlucky to see his left footed shot from the edge of the area thump off the bottom of the post. Thomas Partey had impressed in the opening half hour, but he was forced off the pitch with an injury, to be replaced by Granit Xhaka - making his first appearance of pre-season. Chelsea hit the post themselves, through Hakim Ziyech, and committed a succession of fouls as the half ended in scrappy fashion. Ben White came on at half-time for his debut, replacing Rob Holding, and was soon in the action as Chelsea began the second half well. His first meaningful touch was a goalline block to deny Ziyech after the Moroccan had rounded Leno. At the other end Nicolas Pepe saw a shot deflected just wide while Alexandre Lacazette had a low free-kick well saved by Edouard Mendy. We were knocking on the door and soon had the equaliser - From a corner, Xhaka rose highest in the penalty box and planted his header into the net. The crowd erupted, but the joy was short lived. A few minutes later Tammy Abraham pounced on a loose Hector Bellerin pass on the edge of our area, and tucked the ball in. Arteta made a host of changes, introducing Nuno Tavares and Sambi Lokonga for their first Emirates outings. Another sub, Joe Willock thought he had equalised when his thunderous shot bounced down back off the bar, but the officials agreed it didn't cross the line. Replays suggested otherwise. Emile Smith Rowe capitalised on a Chelsea mistake to score the only goal of the game, and extend our winning run in the league to three games. Having scored his first ever Premier League goal at the weekend against West Brom, he netted again in the derby to set us on the way to a hard-earned three points. This goal owed a bit more to good fortune though, as he stroked home from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's pass, once Chelsea keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga had scrambled back to prevent an own goal. For much of the rest of the game it was about resolute defending, right from the front back to our five-man defence. That was the system Mikel Arteta went for from the start, but it was the most central of those three centre backs - Pablo Mari - who was caught in possession early on to gift Chelsea the first chance of the game. Kai Havertz nicked the ball off the Spaniards toes to race away on goal, but he blazed over when one-on-one. It was Chelsea's turn to hand out the gifts next though, and it led to Smith Rowe scoring the only goal of the game. Jorginho's wayward backpass put Kepa in difficulty. The keeper managed to palm away from his own goalline, but Aubameyang was lurking to pull the loose ball back to Smith Rowe in front of goal, and his low shot squirmed in off the post. Rob Holding made a superb close-range block from Mason Mount's shot to keep us ahead, but Chelsea kept knocking on the door for the remainder of the half, drawing two smart stops from Bernd Leno. The hosts continued to pin us back at the start of the second half, and we had to remain organised in and around our own penalty box. Christian Pulisic did have the ball in the net, but the goal was disallowed for a clear offside after VAR intervened. Hector Bellerin was introduced and immediately had a sight of goal, but shot tamely after good build up play involving Martin Odegaard. We were certainly coming out of our shells as an attacking threat now, with Odegaard himself blazing over from a promising position. Chelsea - three days before their FA Cup final appointment with Leicester City - piled forward late on and hit the woodwork twice in succession in injury time.
