Pakistan recently hosted New Zealand for a five-match T20I series that ended in a draw. The first game was washed out due to rain while both teams won two matches each to share the spoils. The visitors’ skipper Babar Azam was the leading run-scorer for his side, registering 125 runs in four outings while Shaheen Afridi and Abbas Afridi picked up eight and five wickets respectively in the series at home against New Zealand. Pakistan are yet to announce their squad for the global event, scheduled to be held in the Caribbean and the USA in June, and this tour of Ireland could well be an audition for those who are yet to cement their place in the final squad. The visitors have recalled Hasan Ali, who last played a T20I back in September 2022, for the series against Ireland while Salman Ali Agha and Haris Rauf are also back for the Men in Green. Mohammad Amir, who made his international return recently, faced visa issues and did not travel with the rest of the squad to Ireland. His availability remains doubtful for the first match. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has said that their final 15 for the T20 World Cup will be chosen from the 18-man squad that has been picked for the tours of Ireland and England. Ireland, on the other hand, have announced their 15-member squad for the world tournament and would look to test them against some of the big players in world cricket. Irish skipper Paul Stirling has been in sublime form in their domestic T20 tournament and scored 138 runs in three matches. The hosts would rely heavily on the experience of George Dockrell and Andrew Balbirnie along with their captain Stirling when they take on Pakistan at home. Josh Little, who is playing for Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League (IPL), has been given the permission by Cricket Ireland to stay with the franchise till the end of the tournament and he will not be available for the hosts against Pakistan. This will mark the 14th match of the 2024 PSL. Two finalists of 2023, Lahore and Multan, are having contrasting tournaments so far. While the Qalandars are lying at the bottom, with five successive defeats in same number of matches, the Sultans are leading the charts with 8 points from 5 games, winning four and losing one fixture. This is the second time in this competition that these two sides meet each other. The Mohammad Rizwan-led side won the reverse fixture at the Multan Cricket Stadium on Wednesday (February 21) by five wickets. Batting first, Lahore posted 166/5 in 20 overs, with Rassie van der Dussen scoring an excellent half-century and Fakhar Zaman, Sikandar Raza and Carlos Brathwaite playing useful knocks. For Multan, Mohammad Ali picked up two wickets, while Abbas Afridi and Usama Mir grabbed a wicket each. Skipper Rizwan played a captain's knock, hitting 82 runs before Iftikhar Ahmed's 11-ball 34 sealed the deal for the Sultans with an over remaining. Though Shaheen Shah Afridi (2), Zaman Khan (2), and George Linde (1) shared the five wickets to fall, the Qalandars failed to restrict the opponents. Lahore Qalandars are coming off a loss, of course, with them yet to win a game, but van der Dussen smashed a magnificent century against Peshawar Zalmi in a high-scoring encounter. On the other hand, Multan Sultans, too, lost to Peshawar before coming back in the winning ways against Quetta Gladiators to keep their top spot intact. Ali Majid has joined the Multan squad as a partial replacement for Ihsanullah.

They have lost all three games and are in a slump. Karachi Kings, on the other hand, won and lost a game each and are placed fourth with two points. The Qalandars lost to Multan Sultans by 5 wickets in the previous match.
