La Vecchia signora salió con fuerza y Vlahovic comenzó marcando en La Cerámica a los 30 segundos de partido. El Villarreal logró empatar en el segundo tiempo por medio de Parejo y viajó a Italia sin complejos. El penalti de De Ligt sobre Coquelin cambió el partido y los goles de Gerard Moreno, Pau Torres y Danjuma (también desde los 11 metros) dieron un histórico triunfo al Villarreal que le clasificaba para la siguiente ronda. El Bayern visitó al Villarreal como uno de los grandes favoritos pero los alemanes se vieron sometidos por un vendaval ofensivo. Danjuma abrió el marcador a los 7 minutos y los amarillos rozaron el 2-0 tras un gol anulado a Coquelin por fuera de juego. El Villarreal había superado claramente a su rival pero viajaba al Allianz Arena con una mínima ventaja. Lewandowski igualaba la eliminatoria con un ajustado remate y los de Nagelsmann acosaron la portería amarilla en busca del segundo tanto. Con los germanos volcados al ataque, Samu Chukwueze marcaba un tanto para la historia. En semifinales el Liverpool arrasó al Villarreal en Anfield y los amarillos llegaron al estadio de la Cerámica con 2-0 en contra. Sin nada que perder, los locales salieron al ataque y Dia marcó el 1-0 nada más comenzar el partido. El vendaval amarillo continuó insistiendo y Coquelin igualó la eliminatoria con un gran cabezazo. La entrada de Luis Díaz tras el descanso revolucionó el ataque de los ingleses y un sorprendente disparo de Fabinho, cambió la eliminatoria. El gol del brasileño desmoralizó al Villarreal y despertó a los de Klopp, que acabaron dándole la vuelta al partido. El colombiano Luis Díaz marcó el 2-2 y Mané marcó el gol de la victoria inglesa. Como en el año 2006, el Villarreal se quedaba a las puertas de otra final de Champions pero había hecho soñar a un pueblo entero.
