A superlicence is a driver’s ticket to ride in Formula 1. As Colton Herta recently discovered, even if you have the offer of a race seat, without the right paperwork you cannot compete in F1. Currently, to qualify for an FIA Formula 1 Driver Super Licence – to use its official name – you must accumulate 40 points based on your achievements in three of the past four years. The 2023 driver market has offered a Formula 1 silly season for the ages - and it’s still not over. Three teams have seats to fill for next season and, surprisingly at this stage of the year, there are quite a few drivers still in play. We see Alpine, AlphaTauri, Haas and Williams as the teams with vacancies. And the list of drivers in play include race winners Pierre Gasly and Daniel Ricciardo, likely Haas refugee Mick Schumacher, out-of-work drivers Antonio Giovinazzi and Nico Hulkenberg and rookies such as Nyck de Vries, Jack Doohan and Logan Sargeant. Our verdict on the Red Bull AlphaTauri Dutch GP F1 conspiracy theory
Mercedes found itself in the thick of a fight for victory properly for the first time in 2022 at the Dutch Grand Prix, and almost inevitably that resulted in a Red Bull-related controversy flying around after the race. Mercedes’ gamble on a one-stop strategy at Zandvoort was on course to leave Lewis Hamilton in the lead of the race after Max Verstappen’s second scheduled pitstop. But Verstappen was able to retain the lead thanks to a well-timed virtual safety car period, which was called when Yuki Tsunoda’s AlphaTauri stopped on track for a second time. Max Verstappen is breezing to a second straight Formula 1 title despite his car having a problem Red Bull can’t easily fix. F1’s new 2022 technical rules have created cars that do not naturally blend with the style that Verstappen was able to use to such effect with the high-rake Red Bulls that were developed over the previous rules cycle. It might not look like it’s holding Verstappen back that much, with eight victories so far and an 80-point lead in the championship. Our verdict on the Charles Leclerc French GP crash conspiracy theory
Charles Leclerc’s brief reference to a problem with the throttle in his Ferrari led to wild and unsubstantiated conspiracy theories about his crash out of the lead of the French Grand Prix. Leclerc threw away a potential win at Paul Ricard when he spun 360 degrees before nosing into the wall at the long Beausset right-hander.
