How PSG's defeat of Man Utd gave Man City boss Pep Guardiola food for thought. For Manchester United it was a jolted awakening from the trance that nine convincing victories in 10 games lend themselves to producing. Paris Saint-Germain, in their efficient, organised ruthlessness, shone a refined light on the frailties of a side who, despite their marked upturn in form under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, remain blighted by an equal blend of imperfection and inexperience. It was one of the more impressive away performances that Old Trafford has seen in recent memory - PSG earned the enviable honour of becoming the first side to win by more than one goal in European competition at the famous old ground - and Thomas Tuchel's side provided a reminder to Europe, and the Premier League, that United still have considerable work to do to retake their place among the elite. The Premier League table, in its current guise, seems destined to be at least influenced, if not decided, by how Manchester City and Liverpool fare in their respective away trips to United. Jurgen Klopp's side are first up, on February 24, before Pep Guardiola and his record-breakers make the short trip across town on March 16. Those games, based on the season's evidence to date, will see United go through tests as stern as the one presented by Kylian Mbappé and Co. in Tuesday's 2-0 defeat. Perhaps the most impressive facet of PSG's performance was their limiting of Paul Pogba's influence in the centre of midfield. Arsene Wenger's analysis was the most succinct. "In the Champions League you cannot be dominated in midfield," the former Arsenal manager said in his punditry for beIN Sports. "The whole evening, Man United were dominated in midfield. Paris Saint-Germain played with five midfielders and they never lost the ball. Manchester United could never win the ball back. And when they had the ball they lost it very quickly because Paris Saint-Germain dominated the midfield to win the ball back. They lost the battle there in midfield." City's 2-1 victory at Old Trafford last season was the product of two scrappy goals that belied the Blues' dominant showing but Pep Guardiola might have the quiet hope of a more convincing scoreline after seeing from the bereft nature of United's attacking play against PSG once Pogba, the World Cup winner, was rendered ineffectual. Marquinos, the Brazilian centre-back-cum-defensive-midfielder, tempered Pogba's involvement to just 41 passes, a third short of his usual output, with the pace of Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial rendered insignificant as a result. It was a performance that might have sent Guardiola's mind wandering about the possibility of acquiring Marquinos as the solution to the season-old problem of Fernandinho's successor. It is unlikely of course - not least because of the political tensions between Abu Dhabi, City's owners, and Qatar, owners of PSG - yet the 24-year-old's display will surely have gone some way to writing Guardiola's game plan for the trip to Old Trafford for him. Julian Draxler, the Germany winger, operated in behind Pogba and drifted across the pitch from right to left to feed Ángel Di Maria down PSG's left flank. Ashley Young looked every inch of a 33-year-old veteran playing out of position as the Argentinian exploited the space vacated by Young's questionable position and it is a wonder what Leroy Sané could produce with a similar opportunity. Today's top Manchester City stories
Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Julian Draxler aimed something of a dig at Manchester United’s players after their 2-0 Champions League win at Old Trafford. The Germany international spoke after the game and admitted he and his team-mates were glad that Paul Pogba got sent off and would miss the second leg. It wasn’t the best night for Pogba as he saw red late on, but Draxler feels the France international is United’s best player by some way. So much so that he says it’s already good news for PSG that he won’t be playing in their next meeting, suggesting he doesn’t particularly rate the ability of the rest of this Man Utd squad to get a result. ‘For me Paul is the best player of Manchester United,’ Draxler told the Guardian. Paul Pogba will miss Manchester United’s trip to PSG ‘A very important player for the team and you could see he is fantastic. ‘That is why we are very happy he will not play the second leg.’ This was the first time United lost a home game in Europe by more than one goal, and it certainly gives Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side a mountain to climb when they travel to the Parc des Princes.
It wasn’t supposed to be like this. Against his hometown club, in his best form since joining Manchester United and freed from the restraints of Jose Mourinho, Paul Pogba was coming into the game further emboldened by two goals and a man of the match display against Fulham at the weekend. With United unbeaten in 11 games and Paris Saint-Germain left short in midfield since the club’s decision to dump Adrien Rabiot into footballing purgatory, meaning a midfield pairing of 60% fit Marco Verratti and an out-of-position centre-half in Marquinhos, this was Pogba’s chance to shine in the Champions League once again. He was meant to dictate, to dominate, to lead Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side and their newly-found effervescence past the team that are again dominating their ‘farmer’s league’ but have continually fallen short in Europe’s premier club competition. Pogba came into the game looking like the midfielder most likely to bend the last 16 first leg to his will; with eight goals and five assists in nine Premier League matches under Solskjaer, thriving having been handed more creative licence by the Norwegian, it was all set up for him. Instead, his night ended in ignominy, red carded for a second yellow after planting his studs above the shin of Dani Alves. In truth, it should have been a straight red. Long before then however, Pogba had been registered ineffective by PSG. Early on there had been glimpses of quality, not least the lovely double touch that skinned Presnel Kimpembe down the right side. But gradually PSG strangled the Frenchman, and wrestled control despite ostensibly being outnumbered in the central midfield area. Marquinhos attached himself to Pogba and grew into the game, thriving in the role of shielding his defence and blocking Pogba’s attempted forward forays. Alongside him was Verratti, diminutive in stature but boasting limitless bravery (or arrogance) with his willingness to take the ball in any area - no matter how much pressure - and either relieve pressure by buying cheap free kicks or to get his side moving forwards. And once they had stifled Pogba in an attacking sense, they played on his weaknesses defensively. Arsene Wenger, speaking on beIN Sports, laid it out perfectly: “What Paris Saint-Germain did, is they blocked Pogba with Marquinhos in man-to-man marking and when Paris Saint-Germain had the ball, Draxler came in behind Pogba. “That’s where the chances were created behind the midfield of Manchester United.” Pogba, as Wenger also said, is the “one player in the middle who can create the difference”. With so much onus on him to produce with the ball United needed Nemanja Matic and Ander Herrera to step up. But Matic simply didn’t have the mobility against the dashing whirl of Kylian Mbappe, Draxler and Angel Di Maria, while Herrera’s limitations were exposed by the creative nous of Verratti; Matic and Herrera struggled to get the ball into their attackers in anything like a threatening situation -
Paul Pogba has been in stunning form for Manchester United of late, but Paris Saint-Germain are confident of putting the brakes on him when the sides meet in the Champions League on Tuesday night. Pogba has put in a number of eye-catching performances since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer arrived as United manager in December, including scoring twice against Fulham on Saturday. The Frenchman has already scored 11 league goals this season, the best return of his career, while he has also netted twice in the Champions League. However, PSG’s Julian Draxler is confident that the French champions have the players to put the shackles on the World Cup winner at Old Trafford. ‘They have got some great players at Man United, especially in midfield, with Pogba and [Nemanja] Matic,’ said Draxler. ‘They will be key in the game. ‘But we’ve got a lot of quality, too. Our players are more than capable. We stopped Paul sometimes in games between Germany and France. ‘We’ll see what he does. He can do everything, but we’ve got players capable of stopping Paul.’ PSG have former Manchester United player Angel di Maria in their ranks, and Draxler says he has been quizzing the Argentine about life at Old Trafford. ‘I was asking him some things about Man United, but I won’t tell you what he said – it was nothing bad!’ Draxler continued. ‘We will need him without Cavani and Neymar. Hopefully, he gives a good performance. ‘I don’t really know what position I will be playing, but I’m comfortable in lots of positions. I’m not the same type of player as Neymar and, clearly, we’ll miss him. I’ll try to put in a great performance.’ Draxler joined PSG from Wolfsburg in January 2017 for a reported 42m euros (£35.5m) and has been a regular starter in midfield ever since. The 25-year-old has three goals in 19 Ligue 1 appearances this season.
