The Most Dangerous Soccer Field 🏟️🤕
I was watching this clip of Messi and couldn’t believe how bad the field was, so I decided to look into it… Turns out, it’s worse than I ever could have imagined. This could be the most dangerous field in professional soccer. 🤕🏟️ Why? Because technically it’s not even a football pitch. For the last decade, MLS side NYCFC has shared a stadium with the New York Yankees—a less than ideal arrangement for several reasons: A. It’s too small. 70x100 yards is exact minimum size requirement to play in the MLS. B. The sod. In order to cover the infield, the club has to lay out strips of sod before almost every match. While this looks the part—it really isn’t effective, mainly because it’s not rooted to the ground, making for terrible pitch conditions whenever it’s too wet/dry. Pretty shocking this sort of thing is allowed in professional footy, but ig space is a pretty big commodity in NYC. The Reds will begin August by hosting the San Francisco Giants for a three-game weekend series. This weekend’s series is a clash of NL Wild Card hopefuls. The Reds, with a 52-56 record, are 5 1/2 games behind the final Wild Card spot, while the Giants (54-56) are trailing by 4 1/2 games. Here is a look at how these two teams stack up entering a pivotal series: Friday, Aug. 2 First pitch: 7:10 p.m. ET Projected starting pitchers: Andrew Abbott (Reds) vs. TBD Since returning from the All-Star break, the Reds have lost both of Abbott’s starts. Last time out, he allowed four runs on eight hits across four innings against the Tampa Bay Rays while walking two and striking out two. Abbott is 9-7 with a 3.38 ERA in 21 starts this season. He has struck out 89 batters and walked 45 in 117 innings. Home runs have been the primary issue, as Abbott has allowed 20 homers (tied for sixth most in the Majors) this year. San Francisco is tied for third in all of baseball with a wRC+ of 118 against left-handed pitchers. The Giants have clubbed 34 home runs in 1,215 plate appearances against southpaws. Saturday, Aug. 3 First pitch: 7:15 p.m. ET Projected starting pitchers: Hunter Greene (Reds) vs. TBD While Atlanta Braves pitcher Chris Sale is an NL Cy Young odds favorite at +120, Greene remains a viable dark horse at +3500. Greene has put it all together in his third MLB season. He is 7-4 with a 2.97 ERA in 21 starts, striking out 138 batters in 124 1/3 innings of work. However, Greene would still like to reduce his walk rate of 9.6%. Coming off consecutive seven-inning shutout performances, Greene will likely be favored against the Giants on Saturday. They have a below-average wRC+ (97) against right-handed pitchers. Sunday, Aug. 4 First pitch: 12:05 p.m. ET Projected starting pitchers: Carson Spiers (Reds) vs. TBD Spiers joined the rotation in mid-June. Spiers has posted a 4-2 record with a 4.13 ERA in his six starts. He has whiffed 30 batters and walked seven in 32 2/3 innings. Hinds made waves earlier this month by hitting five home runs in his first six MLB games. In those six games, from July 8 to July 13 against the Rockies and then the Marlins, Hinds hit .500 with a 1.951 on-base-plus-slugging percentage (OPS). He won the NL's player of the week award during that stretch. Rece Hinds took the Reds and Major League Baseball by storm when he was called up for the first time, homering in five of his first six games. In the last game before the All-Star break, Hinds was 0-for-4. Since the All-Star break ended, Hinds was 1-for-12 with five strikeouts. Friedl has been expected to return from the injured list, on which he's appeared three times. A hamstring injury has kept him out of action since June 23. So far this season, Friedl is hitting .216 with four home runs and a .676 OPS in 26 games. Hinds, 23-years-old, was a second round pick by the Reds out of high school in 2019. So far this season in 77 games at Triple-A, he's hit .216 with 13 home runs and 126 strikeouts in 296 at-bats. The Reds take the field at 6:50 p.m. for the first game of a three-game set with the Rays Friday. Friedl was scheduled to play center field and hit cleanup.
