It was an extraordinary day of Test match cricket as ball dominated the bat yesterday. India get the first-innings lead. It was the pace bowler's paradise as 23 wickets fell on the first day for 270 runs. At the end of it all the Test match is nicely poised with India having their slight noses in front but South Africa are not out of it by any means. Today's play will be crucial for both sides. Let's recap you how day 1 panned out. The Proteas lost de Zorzi and Stubbs cheaply. It was South African skipper Dean Elgar who won the toss and elected to bat first on a challenging surface. Little did he know what was to follow thereafter. South Africa were blown away by a certain Mohammed Siraj as wickets fell at regular intervals. Only two players crossed double digits in David Bedingham. Kyle Verreynne as they scored 12 and 15 respectively. The rest of them fell for single digits as South Africa were bowled out for 55 in the first session of play in 23.2 overs. Mohammed Siraj was the star of the show with figures of 6/15 in 9 overs. Mukesh Kumar picked up a couple of wickets in his 2.2 overs. While Jasprit Bumrah picked up a couple of wickets for 25 runs in 8 overs. Only 4 bowlers were required to be used by the Indians. In reply India lost Yashasvi Jaiswal for a duck. Shubman Gill and skipper Rohit Sharma built a partnership of 55 runs for the second wicket with Rohit scoring 39 off 50 balls while Shubman Gill scored 36 off 55 balls. Both getting starts and getting out. Virat Kohli came in and looked at ease as he held the innings together with his 46 off 59 balls and top scored in the innings. India were 153/4 at one stage but then shockingly lost 6 wickets for 0 runs in a span of 12 balls to be bowled out for 153 with an overall lead of 98 runs. Wickets were shared by the South African pacers. Kagiso Rabada Lungi Ngidi and Nandre Burger all picked up three wickets apiece while there was a run out in the innings as well. Faced with a deficit of 98 runs South Africa put on an improved batting display. The openers Aiden Markram Dean Elgar put on 37 runs for the first wicket. Dean Elgar in his final innings fell for 12 to Mukesh Kumar. David Bedingham has just come into the crease. Aiden Markram is holding the innings together with his 36* off 51 balls as South Africa ended Day 1 in their second innings at 62/3 after 17 overs. Shubman Gill completes 1000 Test runs. Three bowlers used by India so far in this innings. Mukesh Kumar picked up a couple of wickets while Jasprit Bumrah got rid of Tristan Stubbs with a beauty. Siraj is still wicketless while Prasidh Krishna is yet to be introduced into the attack. South Africa win the toss and opted to bat first India make two changes whereas South Africa make three. Tristan Stubbs making his Test debut Elgar opens the batting in his final Test. Siraj draws first blood by dismissing Markram on two Elgar chops one back onto the stumps to give Bumrah his first and fall on four Debutant Stubbs departs on three as the Indian pace duo of Bumrah and Siraj breathed fire South Africa were reduced to 15/4. As a strangle down leg ended de Zorzi’s stay at the crease on two. Rohit starts positively and hits Ngidi for three boundaries in the second over KG Rabada draws first blood for South Africa by dismissing Jaiswal on a duck. Burger is greeted with three boundaries by the Indian skipper 50 comes up for India in the eighth over. Audio Content Disclaimer For This Content This is self-created content and not copied content. For all the hype around India being favourites to secure an away series victory against South Africa they were outclassed inside three days of the opening Test. Despite the inexperience factor and the injury to skipper Temba Bavuma. The likes of Marco Jansen Nandre Burger David Bedingham and Tony de Zorzi displayed maturity and supported seniors Kagiso Rabada and Dean Elgar - to register an innings and 32-run win over the two-time WTC finalists. Rohit Sharma the India skipper didn’t offer excuses for India’s abject surrender. “We were not good enough to win Rohit said. If we have to win Test matches we have to come together collectively and we didn't do that. Guys have visited South Africa before we know what to expect and everyone has their own plan. We were challenged we didn't adapt well. India would look for a complete performance to end the tour on a high. All eyes would be on their seniors Rohit Virat Kohli KL Rahul and Bumrah as the visitors hunt for a series-levelling victory. India batters desperately need a mixture of the patience exhibited by Rahul during his 101-run knock in the first innings at SuperSport Park. The fluency shown by Kohli in the second innings. In the bowling department India would aim to strike in pairs to shoot down the Proteas. South Africa on the other hand have an early lead. It’s about keeping their plans simple and wrapping things up at Newlands. If the hosts can continue their dominance it’ll go down as an incredible result given they lost the ODI series 2-1. They would need the same discipline and clarity to stifle India. Being 1-0 up in a series is a position of strength but South Africa would be aware that India are no pushovers and are capable of bouncing back. Best example - 36 all out to 2-1. India: Uncapped pace bowler Avesh Khan has been picked as a replacement for Mohammed Shami who has an ankle injury. Ravindra Jadeja who missed the first Test due to back spasms is likely to return. Those are the greatest memories you can share with your team and everyone who has an influential role in the background. Shardul Thakur who sustained a blow to his left shoulder during an optional practice session last week is fine and available for selection. South Africa: Bavuma who suffered a hamstring strain in Centurion has been ruled out of the New Year’s Test. Dean Elgar will be the Proteas stand-in captain in what will be his final Test. Meanwhile Zubayr Hamza has been added to the squad as Bavuma’s replacement. In another big blow pace bowler Gerald Coetzee too will miss the second Test due to pelvic inflammation. Head-to-Head Record in Tests 43 Matches Played 18 - South Africa Won 15 - India Won 10 - Drawn. Usually when India touch down in Cape Town they are on the threshold of a dream. Thrice since 1992 have they arrived here to play the decider winning which would have enabled them to tick South Africa off their list of places to win a series at. What to expect: A full house and midsummer heat which should take most of the spice out of the pitch. The surface looked less green on Tuesday than it did on Monday. In any case Newlands tends to offer South Africa's fairest contest between bat and ball. No rain has been forecast for the duration of the match. "I only play the game to win. I don't care about stats. I care about wins. I care about series wins. Audio Content Disclaimer For This Content This is self-created content and not copied content. One between Australia and Pakistan is going on amidst the rain threat at the famous MCG while the other is all set to take place at the SuperSport Park in Centurion between the hosts South Africa and India. This is the opening Test of the two-match series and two teams are getting ready for a battle of the pacers. Mukesh Kumar is seen bowling on the side pitch. The wet patches are being dried using a hair-dryer. The festive season is in the air and as we eagerly await the arrival of the New Year it's time for some serious business on the cricket field. Following the conclusion of the limited-overs series South Africa and India now meet in the highly anticipated Freedom Trophy. The two-match Test series begins with the Boxing Day Test at SuperSport Park in Centurion before the action shifts to Cape Town for the second and final Test. This series marks the start of South Africa's Test Championship cycle and they will be looking to start the campaign with a win. The Proteas will be led by their permanent Test captain Temba Bavuma and he will be keen to lead by example throughout the series. The hosts have a lethal pace attack in Gerald Coetzee Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi. Keshav Maharaj is the lone spinner in the squad while Nandre Burger. Wiaan Mulder and Marco Jansen form the all-rounder options. The bowling line-up seems settled but the batting will be put to the test in this series. All eyes will be on Dean Elgar who has decided to hang up his boots after this series and will be hoping to end his career on a high. Alongside Elgar and Bavuma Aiden Markram will have to shoulder the responsibility while Tony de Zorzi and Keegan Petersen are among. Rohit Sharma Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill will form the core of India's top order while Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer will solidify the middle order. In all likelihood KL Rahul will don the gloves in what will be his first Test since February 2023. Ravindra Jadeja is always a force to be reckoned with with the ball and he also makes his presence felt with the bat more often in Tests than in the two white-ball formats. In the bowling department. The last time these two sides met in a Test series in the Rainbow Nation India came very close to creating history but South Africa recovered from an early setback to win the series 2-1. The stage is set for what promises to be a real cracker of a series between two giants. Who are you backing to land the first blow in this Boxing Day Test? It is confirmed now- Krishna is debuting for India in Test cricket. He receives his Test cap from the Bumrah. Pitch Report | Shaun Pollock: "It's a decent grass covering and South Africa is hoping for some movement. However they prefer to bat first since the pitch tends to slow down and become unpredictable as the game progresses. Considering the anticipated weather conditions it wouldn't be surprising if they opt for a spinner. With a significant amount of expected rain the playing conditions are unlikely to undergo substantial changes. Winning the toss and capitalizing on the initial period would be crucial." Ravi Shashtri: "Opt for batting first and endure the initial two hours. Even if you find yourselves two wickets down by lunch you'll be well-placed to reach a total of 280 or 290. Despite the seemingly green pitch there's more to it than meets the eye and persistence is key. Given the prevailing weather conditions consider fielding three fast bowlers an all-rounder and a spinner." Virat Kohli Rahul Dravid and Jasprit Bumrah are bowling on the side pitch now. Two giants of the game take on each other at Boland Park in Paarl in what is a decisive contest to see who reigns supreme as the ODI series is currently deadlocked at 1-1. Even though the T20I series finished on level terms as one of the games was washed out the winner will certainly have a lasting impression. India had a memorable outing with the ball in the first ODI in Johannesburg as Arshdeep Singh and Avesh Khan accounted for 9 of the 10 wickets and bundled out the opposition for just 116 runs. Arshdeep was the star with a maiden five-wicket haul in ODIs and then Sai Sudharsan the debutant notched up a classical 50 to bring an even bigger smile on the faces of the Indian coaching staff and fans. Bright and sunny with no chances of rain. However it was a different story in the 2nd ODI at Gqeberha as the Indian batters faltered but Sai yet again proved mettle and skipper Rahul too made a half-century. The bowlers didn't have much to bowl at and did beat the bat quite a lot but just didn't have the cutting edge especially the spinners who were largely ineffective and dealt with ease. South Africa vs India 3rd ODI Which team will win the series finale? Toss Update South Africa won toss opted to bowl first. South Africa on the other hand needed something to give after a couple of really shoddy batting performances against the same side and at the same venue but they did turn it all around. Nandre Burger bowled fast and accurately picking up early wickets for his team and setting it all up. The duo of Lizaad Williams and Beuran Hendricks were also top-notch and troubled the Indian batters eventually restricting them to an under-par total. With just 213 runs to win the opening pair of Tony de Zorzi Hendricks started off cautiously but the former did go for his shots every now and then. Both raked in half-centuries but Hendricks never looked settled and got out but de Zorzi went from strength to strength bringing up a maiden ODI ton took his side over the line. Now the final game looms large before the action moves to Test cricket and the sides seem pretty evenly matched. Who are you backing to win? Paarl's pitch like its predecessors in the rubber should provide a fitting stage. The crowd will grace the occasion with verve. All that will be needed for the match to live up to its billing is for the players to do something worth watching; something we hadn't thought would happen. Like Arshdeep Singh's 5/37 at the Wanderers or Tony de Zorzi's unbeaten 119 at St George's Park. see how India could improve on their XI. South Africa are unchanged from the last ODI. Let the moneyballers and analysts plot every twist and turn of a match before it happens. Let the unimaginative coddle themselves with their consistency coda. Let those who have eyes only for one team and its players refuse to look up from their obsession. Let the rest of us watch a game of cricket because we don't know what might happen. Otherwise what would be the point? given that conditions in Paarl are likely to be similar to those in Gqeberha. What to expect: Thirty-six degree heat hardly a soothing breeze not a drop of rain a slowish pitch - 300 has been passed three times in the 15 men's ODIs played here but not 400 - and the most joyous crowd in the country; perhaps in all of cricket. With Tony de Zorzi Nandre Burger and Beuran Hendricks starring at St George's Park to level the series changes would be ill-advised. Despite Tuesday's result it's difficult. But they will be looking make the best use of that. Getting a top quality replacement key here. Even though first XI is fairly settled CSK want a pace bowling allrounder who seamlessly fit middle order to replace Moeen in games that aren't played in Chepauk. Gujarat Titans: How do you fill the gap left by Hardik Pandya In terms of leadership Shubman is going to take charge but what Hardik allrounder brings will be very hard to replace. There aren't many Indian out who can bowl pace bat at 4/5. Shankar will have to step up but Titans will be eyeing overseas seam bowling allrounder in all likelihood. Lucknow Super Giants: The decision to acquire Padikkal makes sense now that Rahul is looking to establish himself in the middle order in T20 cricket as well. That move would bolster LSG's middle order they definitely need a backup Indian batter or two. While they have promising fast bowlers like Mohsin LSG would likely target experienced Indian seamer to bolster that attack especially after the departures of Unadkat Avesh. Punjab Kings: Punjab Kings do have a fairly settled first choice XI at their disposal but lack of quality Indian batters a backup will be a cause concern. They would ideally like one overseas backup batter well having released Rajapaksa. Rahul is the only wrist spinner in entire squad there is a lot of reliance on him to pick wickets in the middle overs. Kolkata Knight Riders: With a strong Indian core in the batting department KKR have other areas to focus. Their openers Gurbaz Roy have been a bit inconsistent so they might another overseas opener to challenge the duo. But definitely need least one solid overseas keeper a local keeper in that squad. KKR don't have any experience apart from Russell. Delhi Capitals: With doubts persisting over Rishabh Pant's ability to keep wickets in the tournament Delhi Capitals would want another keeper apart from Porel in the squad. DC's biggest issue has been the lack of reliable finishers. Given they might also need a keeper someone like Josh Inglis will be a useful addition given his flexibility with the bat. Mumbai Indians: Hardik's return makes them look very strong but they have one glaring weakness in that spin department. Chawla and Kartikeya have been decent but everything points towards one huge attempt to add Hasaranga to their ranks. It won't be easy given they have multiple players to be added to their squad with a small budget. Royal Challengers Bangalore: A proven overseas fast bowler and a good overseas spinner will be on the agenda having released Josh Hazlewood and Hasaranga. Shahbaz departure will make them target Indian spinner as well. Vyshak had his moments last time but Patel's exit might force the thinktank to opt for another Indian pacer. Rajasthan Royals: Safe to say Royals have almost all bases covered and have a strong bowling attack. They might look to strengthen the squad by adding a couple of allrounders though and a backup Indian batter. Buttler's impact at the top of the order is hard to replicate. So getting a solid backup for the Englishman will be on their agenda as well. Sunrisers Hyderabad: Given the fact that they have a solid squad SRH can go big on a couple of top players pretty easily. An upgrade on Marco Farooqi is definitely possible. If not an overseas gun pacer SRH can definitely go big on overseas spinner to bolster that spin attack. Wanindu Hasaranga is up for grabs. Considering the first match of this men's T20I series at Kingsmead on Sunday was lost in its entirety because of the weather and Tuesday's game at St George's Park was curtailed after the skies leaked again that's no small thing. Cricket minded fans of the electrical thunderstorms that grace the Highveld during South Africa's summers and there are many would concede that the match must take precedence over even the epic show the weather puts on in Johannesburg. With both teams playing only four more T20Is before the World Cup in the format in the Caribbean and the United States in June they need all the gametime they can get. Many of the players involved will turn out for a host of T20 franchises before the World Cup but nothing polishes on-field and dressingroom dynamics like playing together. It's what turns collections of cricketers into teams who win tournaments. On the admittedly scant evidence of the Tuesday when South Africa won by five wickets with seven balls to spare. The home side are tightening those nuts and bolts better than the visitors. Neither side handed down a masterclass in a match that was messy from start to finish but one of them found ways to win while the other lost their way. Maybe India are still getting over last month's rude awakening at the ODI World Cup which around 1.4-billion people seemed convinced they had some divine right to win. Until they didn't and Australia did because sport doesn't work that way. The South Africans haven't had to face that challenge no-one expected them to come home with the World Cup. Indeed they performed better than anticipated to reach the semis. That's not to read too much into the last game of a rubber India can no longer win. Besides they have claimed only two of the 15 bilateral series they have played in South Africa across the formats. But one of those was a T20I series in February 2018. Gerald Coetzee South Africa's most successful bowler on Tuesday with a haul of 3/32 has been taken out of the mix (see below) and Shamsi whose Gqeberha economy rate of 4.50 was easily the best in both attacks might be less effective on a Wanderers pitch. So theoretically the Indians have a better chance of winning than on Tuesday. Also the Wanderers is the only regularly used international ground in South Africa where India haven't lost more matches than they've won. They're level at 5-5 in Joburg. But the South Africans know how to win at the Wanderers where they have been victorious in 65.98% of their matches regardless of format in which a positive result has been reached. Only in Centurion are they more successful on that score and just 0.29% more. For all its reputation as a fast bowler's venue the Wanderers is a good place to bat especially in white-ball cricket. So will Suryakumar Yadav celebrate retaining the top spot in the T20I batting rankings with an innings as bristling with aggression as his 36-ball 56 on Tuesday? Will Rinku Singh convert his unbeaten 68 off 39 in the same match into something bigger? Or will potential debutants Nandre Burger and Ottniel Baartman again see below deny them by announcing themselves in style? As always before a match questions hang in the air like rain clouds. That's better for cricket of course than real rain clouds hanging in the air. What to expect: A willing pitch a small fast outfield and little chance according to the forecast of rain. Shubman Gill might make way for Gaikwad who didn't play on Tuesday due to illness. Ravi Bishnoi looks set to crack the nod ahead of Kuldeep. Not for India fans. Their team defeated Australia 4-1 in a T20I series a week ago. Their team lost a World Cup final three weeks ago. What appears is that even if their team doesn’t have the likes of skipper Rohit Sharma Virat Kohli Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami for a series or two the crowd proudly wears the blue jersey to witness them play consistent cricket. India now face South Africa in a three-match T20I series beginning Sunday (December 10) at Kingsmead Durban. The second T20I will be played on December 12 at St George's Park Gqeberha while the third and final game is scheduled for December 14 at New Wanderers Stadium Johannesburg. In the absence of Rohit and the injured Hardik Pandya Suryakumar Yadav will be the stand-in skipper. It’s pertinent to mention that Suryakumar led India in the T20Is against Australia too. Shubman Gill who was rested for the Australia series is back in the mix. Both Rohit and Virat Kohli requested a break from the white-ball leg of the tour after a jam-packed three months. Ravindra Jadeja makes a return and so do Kuldeep Yadav and Mohammed Siraj. Jadeja is also named vice-captain for the series. India will know they need a complete team performance against South Africa who’ll be high on confidence after some dominating displays in the ODI World Cup. Kagiso Rabada and Temba Bavuma have been left out. Gerald Coetzee and Marco Jansen will miss the third T20I. The mentioned players aim to focus on the high-octane two-match Test series against India starting December 26. Lungi Ngidi who initially was part of the T20I squad for the opening two games has been ruled out of the entire series due to a left ankle sprain. Ngidi is being closely monitored. Skipper Aiden Markram Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller form a strong Protea middle-order. Meanwhile Anrich Nortje and Wayne Parnell continue to recover from their stress fracture and shoulder issue respectively. Both teams missing some key players may not be a bad thing because it will allow them to test those who are otherwise on the bench. Since the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 India have competed in six T20I series against five different opponents. They beat New Zealand (2) Sri Lanka Ireland and Australia but lost to the Windies. At the Asian Games India didn’t drop a game. The final against Afghanistan was washed out. By the virtue of being the top-seeded team India won the gold medal. After suffering a group-stage exit at the last year’s World T20 South Africa have played only two 3-match T20I series three games each against Australia and the West Indies. The Proteas suffered a 3-0 whitewash at the hands of Australia. The 2021 T20 World Cup champions while they lost 2-1 to the two-time winners (in 2012 and 2016) Windies. South Africa vs India 1st T20I Which team will come out on top? Cloudy with a chance of rain. That followed the Australians finding a way to humble hitherto unbeaten India in the ODI World final in Ahmedabad on November 19. India's men's side have offered an answer to that question by claiming four victories in the five T20Is they played against Australia in the past not quite three weeks. What to expect: A slowish but fair surface which could be enlivened by the 15 millimetres of rain that has been forecast for a stormy morning. Anticipate also a farewell for Wilson Ngobese who joined Kingsmead's ground staff in 1975 and has been the head curator since 1999. This will be Ngobese's last international pitch. Can teams move past the blow of failing to win an ODI World Cup with success in mere T20Is? Audio Content Disclaimer For This Content This is self-created content and not copied content. There's a mood of celebration in India after the successful landing of Chandrayaan. Not much is going to dampen it today but as far as the cricket is concerned the weather in Dublin is a bit of a dampener. The toss has been delayed due to rain. India lead the series 2-0 having put in a strong performance in the previous match. Some good runs for Ruturaj Gaikwad Sanju Samson and Rinku Singh followed by another cracking effort from Jasprit Bumrah who's hardly showing any rustiness of being out for so long. Prasidh Krishna was very impressive with his pace and bounce as well boding well for India's pace stocks. Nothing new from the middle as it is still raining and the waiting game continues. We can only hope that it clears up quickly and that we get to see some action. Prasidh Krishna (India): "Yes it's a proud day for us. We have been following the moon landing [on Chandrayaan 3 moon landing] in the team bus and followed it to the ground. We saw it there. Really happy after being selected in the squad for Asia Cup. It's gonna be the same process for me. I think yeah I am getting into groove. I have been running well. I would be looking execute things well. I think is about being consistent what I wanna do. If I am able to execute what I am trying to do it's going to be good for me. It's an important match for me. The covers are firmly on. Super Sopper is moving around! It's still drizzling and the covers are placed. We can only expect the weather to ease off. Uh oh! Unfortunately it currently raining at The Village in Malahide and the covers are firmly in place. a result toss has been delayed for now. Let's keep our fingers crossed and hope that the weather clears up soon for us to have a prompt start. We are nearing the end of yet another bilateral series as Ireland and India square off for one last time in the 3rd and final T20I at Malahide in Dublin. As most of us would have expected the visitors have an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series but Ireland have certainly had their moments and did have a chance in the first match that was cut short due to rain. India though won the second game fairly convincingly the batters put on a stellar show and then the bowlers backed them up as well. Having put bat by the Irish skipper Paul Stirling. the pair of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad started firing early but they did lose a couple of quick wickets in the Powerplay. Gaikwad played the anchor role and scored a half-century before the likes of Sanju Samson Shivam Dube and Rinku Singh really upped the tempo. It was Singh who impressed most on his first-ever senior outing with the bat at the International level. Ireland a similar story with the bat from the first game as they lost early wickets but Balbirnie looked in sublime touch and went on to score 72. While chasing a score of more than 180 you do need more one batter to step up and unfortunately for the home side no one else got a 30-40 odd with tailenders Adair cutting the deficit with a fine cameo. The Indian skipper Jasprit Bumrah looked very close to his best with the ball and led his side pretty well too. He will now have his focus on making a clean sweep but we might see the likes of Jitesh Sharma and a few others a game. Ireland do have enough individual talent to really challenge the Indian side but Paul Stirling needs to take more responsibility with the bat and their ace pacer Little needs to fire as well. Can the Irish pull off an upset and give the home fans a big reason to rejoice? Audio Content Disclaimer For This Content This is self-created content and not copied content.
