Prima che l'Unione Sovietica e la Jugoslavia si dividessero in mille frammenti, l'ultima notte della Cecoslovacchia, l'ultima notte di qualificazione a un Mondiale a 24 squadre, con molti meno posti disponibili. La notte che cambierà la vita di almeno cinque persone diverse. DAVID GINOLA SANTIAGO CANIZARES DINO BAGGIO PAUL BODIN DAVIDE GUALTIERI (ok, questi ultimi due forse non sono così conosciuti) Oltre a quello della Germania campione uscente, l'Europa ha dodici posti: le prime due di ognuno dei sei gironi di qualificazione. L'Europa sta cambiando profondamente: già dall'Europeo 1996 ci saranno molte nazionali in più, la frammentazione della Jugoslavia e dell'Unione Sovietica porterà una quindicina di nuovi Paesi. Qualificazioni strane. La prima europea a qualificarsi aritmeticamente è stata non l'Italia, non la Spagna, non l'Inghilterra, non l'Olanda... ma LA GRECIA, al suo primo Mondiale nella storia. Poi la Russia, che non è più URSS, non ha più la scritta CCCP sulle maglie, ha cambiato bandiera... ma si è qualificata. Poi qualcun'altra alla spicciolata, la Norvegia che è clamorosamente seconda nel ranking FIFA. Una settimana fa è capitato alla Svezia, altra squadra da tenere d'occhio, come tutte quelle del Nord Europa. La sera del 17 novembre 1993 ci sono ancora otto posti da assegnare e sono ancora tante le squadre in ballo: ci sono l'Inghilterra, l'Olanda, il Portogallo, la Francia, la Spagna, il Belgio, i campioni d'Europa della Danimarca... L'ITALIA! Capitolo 1 Inghilterra L'Inghilterra deve seppellire di gol San Marino, vincendo con almeno 7 gol di scarto, e sperare che l'Olanda perda in Polonia: il Daily Mirror ha promesso 10mila sterline (circa 25 milioni di lire) ai polacchi se batteranno l'Olanda. La serata inizia in modo grottesco, con il gol di Davide Gualtieri su sciagurato errore di Stuart Pearce, con gli inglesi che riescono a prendere gol da calcio d'inizio a favore dopo 8,3 secondi, che per 24 anni rimarrà il gol più veloce della storia delle qualificazioni mondiali, battuto da Christian Benteke contro Gibilterra, 8,1 secondi, nel 2017. Quando due anni dopo sarà la Scozia a venire a giocare a San Marino in una partita di Qualificazioni Europee, i tifosi scozzesi indosseranno t-shirt con la scritta “GUALTIERI, EIGHT SECONDS”, e lui stesso verrà coinvolto in infiniti giri di bevute gratis. L'Olanda soffre per un tempo, anche se in Polonia sono molti più gli olandesi che i polacchi, poi è una doppietta di Dennis Bergkamp a chiudere il discorso. L'Inghilterra è fuori da un Mondiale dopo 16 anni. Graham Taylor, il ct famigeratamente noto con l'appellativo di “testa di rapa” presso i tabloid” dopo l'eliminazione ai gironi di Euro 1992, verrà silurato e sostituito da Terry Venables. Newcastle United travelled to Selhurst Park to take on Crystal Palace in their first game since the sacking of Steve Bruce with Graeme Jones taking charge for the first time. It's safe to say a lot of fans were a little confused when the team sheet came out with a few changes made but not maybe the changes the fans had been hoping for. Almiron and Willock the surprise names on the bench. First half it was very poor with Newcastle only having 29% of the possession and sitting back most of the half and Crystal Palace will very very annoyed they didn't go into the break at least a couple of goals ahead. Benteke did give them the lead only to be cancelled out by a simply world class goal by Callum Wilson. All in all a point gained by the toon but we are still looking for that elusive first win of the season in the Premier League with Chelsea next up in a weeks time. Alexandre Lacazette grabbed a late, late equaliser to salvage a point against Palace. In a topsy-turvy game, we had looked to be in control after taking an early lead through Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. But two mistakes in the midfield after the break were ruthlessly punished by Palace, leaving us staring at the prospect of a fourth league defeat of the season. But with virtually the very last kick of the game, substitute Lacazette was in the right place to tuck home the loose ball from close range when Ben White's shot was parried. In the end we had to settle for a point, but it looked like being so much more than that after a promising start. Having waited an extra couple of days to return to action after the latest international break, we were raring to go early on, taking the game to our visitors from the off. The early pressure soon paid off, and it was the skipper who got the opener. Takehiro Tomiyasu and Nicolas Pepe exchanged passes on the edge of the area before the latter forced a diving save from Vicente Guaita. Aubameyang was in the right place to volley home left footed at the far post. It was no more than we deserved from a lively start. We kept the intensity up, but Emile Smith Rowe's low shot aside, couldn't extend our advantage, failing to build on the early lead. In fact it was Palace who slowly grew into the game, and the forward trio of Christian Benteke, Jordan Ayew and Odsonne Edouard were beginning to unsettle our defence. And just on the stroke of half-time Aaron Ramsdale had to be alert to tip Conor Gallagher's long-range effort just wide. Bukayo Saka - on the end of a nasty looking kick from James McArthur earlier in the first half - could not return after the interval and was replaced by Sambi Lokonga. Within five minutes of the restart Palace were level. Thomas Partey was caught in possession outside the box, Benteke took the ball on and finished smartly low to Ramsdale's left. Palace were on top now, and Ayew stung Ramsdale's gloves from 20 yards. Mikel Arteta sent on Alexandre Lacazette for the last 20 minutes or so and the Frenchman immediately set up a chance for Smith Rowe, but he fluffed his shot. Lacazette was then set up wonderfully by Aubameyang – Laca's shot was kept out by a full-stretch Guaita save. But it was Palace who struck next, again making the most of sloppy play from Arsenal. This time Lokonga was dispossessed, Palace broke and Edouard lashed in off the underside of the bar. Kieran Tierney rattled the crossbar from close range late on, and it looked as though it would be former Gunner Patrick Vieira and his side who would take the spoils. But then Lacazette made his late, late intervention. Deep into the last minute of injury time we won a corner.
