Kickoff: Spain, Portugal can’t coast to World Cup 2nd round
Kickoff: Spain, Portugal can’t coast to World Cup 2nd round

Portugal and Spain opened up their World Cup campaigns with an entertaining draw. Now each team wants a routine victory to secure its place in the round of 16. The first day of simultaneous matches at the tournament includes Portugal playing Iran at the same time its neighbor and rival faces Morocco. The games are scheduled that way to avoid giving any team the advantage of knowing its competitors’ results as group play wraps up. Portugal and Spain followed up their 3-3 draw with 1-0 victories. That means they’re level atop Group B with four points and the same goal difference. Iran is one point behind thanks to its win over Morocco. That means Iran could eliminate Portugal from the World Cup with a win. But if Spain loses to Morocco, Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal could advance even in defeat. Ever the showman, the 33-year-old Ronaldo has scored all four of Portugal’s goals so far while hinting that he considers himself the “GOAT,” or greatest of all time. Now he faces his former national team coach, Carlos Queiroz, who’s led Iran for the past seven years. Iran is playing in its fifth World Cup, but has never advanced out of the group stage. Queiroz’s stint coaching Portugal ended after the 2010 World Cup in South Africa amid reports of a difficult relationship between him and Ronaldo, who implied the coach was to blame for the team’s failure. Queiroz called Monday’s game “the most interesting and important match in my seven years with Iran” and said the drama of facing Ronaldo was worthy of a Martin Scorsese movie. Spain’s sudden dismissal of coach Julen Lopetegui was the talk of the tournament before play began. But that seems like ages ago. Players have moved on under new coach Fernando Hierro. “We are happy with him and we are learning a lot,” left back Jordi Alba said of Hierro. “The idea remains the same as before with Lopetegui. The team’s essence remains the same.” Morocco outplayed both Portugal and Iran in stretches, but has yet to score a goal, losing both matches 1-0. Spain is powered by Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa, who has three goals in two matches but could be frustrated by Morocco’s defense, which is anchored by Medhi Benatia of Juventus. Spain and Morocco play in Kaliningrad, the westernmost city in the World Cup, which is sandwiched between Lithuania and Poland on the Baltic Sea. The Portugal-Iran match is roughly 1,180 miles (1,900 kilometers) to the east in Saransk, the smallest host city in the tournament. Both games are at 9 p.m. (2 p.m. EDT, 1800 GMT). Here’s a look at Monday’s other matches: URUGUAY VS. RUSSIA 5 p.m. (10 a.m. EDT, 1400 GMT) The host nation would top its group with a victory or a draw in Samara, thanks to its superior goal difference. Russia beat up on overmatched Saudi Arabia and undermanned Egypt for eight goals in its two victories. Uruguay, the favorite to win the group, got past each opponent 1-0 and is also assured a spot in the next round. The Group A winner will face the se

Portugal 1-0 Morocco REPORT: Cristiano Ronaldo heads only goal of the game in Group B clash in Moscow Cristiano Ronaldo continued his quest for the Golden Boot and World Cup glory as Portugal beat Morocco in Moscow. The Real Madrid superstar scored the only goal of the game after four minutes to take his tally for the tournament to four. Ronaldo's followed up his hat-trick in the 3-3 draw with Spain, taking the European champions to four points. Iran have three points and Spain one ahead of their meeting later on Wednesday. Morocco, who had a real go at the Luzhniki Stadium but failed to convert their chances, are pointless having also lost 1-0 to Iran and cannot progress to the second round. Despite their battling display, Morocco will rue the unforgivable defending that made all their subsequent good work irrelevant. They qualified for the finals without conceding a goal in six matches yet somehow opted against marking the most dangerous attacker at the tournament in the six yard box when Joao Moutinho swung in a cross from a short corner and Ronaldo duly buried the header. It was his 85th international goal, taking him beyond Hungarian Ferenc Puskas's European record, with only Iran's Ali Daei ahead of him on 109. Morocco, in their first finals appearance for 20 years, regrouped well and showed some real positivity in attack with Hakim Ziyech and Nordin Amrabat seeing plenty of the ball but Portugal generally defended well to limit the danger. Amrabat was furious at not being awarded a penalty after wrestling with Raphael Guerreiro and the entire squad erupted in outrage. Coach Herve Renard was also ticked off for the new offence of gesticulating to demand a video assistant referee (VAR) review of the incident, which left Amrabat with rugby-style stud-rake marks on his stomach that he insisted on displaying to anyone who would look. Morocco were the dominant side in the second half and Portugal were grateful to goalkeeper Rui Patricio for a fantastic diving low save to touch clear Younes Belhanda's sharp header, while Medhi Benatia blazed over the bar when he should have scored after an hour. However, Portugal held out and go on to complete their first-round against Iran while Morocco face Spain, both on June 25. Morocco Vs Iran ( 0 - 1 ) FiFA World Cup 15.06.2018Morocco 0-1 Iran REPORT: Bouhaddouz own goal hands Carlos Queiroz's side World Cup winner in Group B opener The Iranian Messi had his blushes here by a Morocco nightmare as substitute Ariz Bouhaddouz headed a stoppage time own goal. Sardar Azmoun, 23, had gone into the tournament with a huge reputation as the star man in Carlos Queiroz’s team. After missing the cut for the last World cup, the Rubin Kazan striker had netted 23 times in 32 games over the subsequent four years for his country, making him Iran's all time fifth highest goalscorer. Faced with the chance to give his side a crucial start to their Group B campaign, however, he fluffed his lines. A superbly-worked move sent him clear of the Morocco defence, three minutes before the break. Azmoun looked certain to score. Yet instead of finding the net he allowed keeper Monir El Kajoui to keep his effort out with his outstretched leg. The rebound was sent over the bar. Iran had arrived in Russia as the first Asian team to qualify for the World Cup. They boasted a front line of freescoring talents with Azmoun supplemented by Alkmaar’s Alireza Jahanbaksh, who netted 21 times last season. Olympiakos striker Karim Ansarifard had scored 17 times over the past campaign. But all three were unable to find a way through a Morocco side that had conceded just once in their past eight qualifiers. Stylish Ajax midfielder Hakim Ziyech was another to be frustrated, seeing his 79th-minute volley saved by El Kajoui. Herve Renard’s team, the Lions of the Atlas, had impressed with their attractive, enterprising start to the contest. They’d started their World Cup undefeated in their previous 18 games, winning 14 of them. Yet for all their build-up they too could not make the breakthrough, with Iran keeper Ali Beiranvand in fine form. In the 19th minute the Persepolis stopper did well to save a deflected effort from Juventus defender Mehdi Benatia from a corner. In the 26th minute the Iran players threw their bodies in the way of two Morocco strikes, the second a fierce effort from Galatasaray midfielder Younes Belhanda. The strike hit Rouzbeh Chesmi before rebounding to safety. Queiroz, the former Real Madrid boss and Manchester United assistant manager, was rocked in the dying minutes by the loss of Jahanbaksh through injury. But just minutes later he was left delighted as defender Ehsan Haji Safi swung a free-kick into the box and Bouhaddouz sent a diving header into his own net. The Iranians celebrated as though they’d won the tournament. Morocco must now try to find a way to recover.
