Kroatien fand zunächst über den Kreis immer wieder zum Ausgleich, während Ungarns Abwehr mit starker Präsenz überzeugte. Im kroatischen Angriffsspiel schlichen sich jedoch einige Fehler ein, die die Ungarn konsequent nutzten, um ihren Vorsprung auf vier Tore auszubauen. Eine schwache Überzahlphase brachte die Kroaten dann zurück ins Spiel. Mit dem Remis (16:16) zur Pause blieb alles offen. Zu Beginn der zweiten Hälfte verwandelte Bence Imre einen Siebenmeter sicher, doch trotz starker ungarischer Defensive blieb das Spiel eng. Ungarn scheiterte im Angriff oft an Keeper Kuzmanovic, und Kroatien nutzte Fehler konsequent aus. Nach der Roten Karte gegen Ligetvári hielt Zoran Ilić sein Team mit wichtigen Treffern im Spiel. Kurzzeitig konnte Ungarn sich mit 4 Toren absetzen, doch Kroatien kam dank Martinović und Pesic wieder ins Spiel. Kurz vor Schluss glichen die Gastgeber per Siebenmeter zum 30:30 aus. Der letzte Angriff von Sipic entschied das Viertelfinale.
