Nach einem Ballgewinn von Thomas Müller tief in der gegnerischen Hälfte traf Michael Olise den Pfosten (6.). Es war schon der zehnte Aluminium-Treffer der Münchner in dieser Bundesliga-Saison. Vor 33.305 Zuschauerinnen und Zuschauern hatten die Bayern große Mühe. Die Kompany-Mannschaft wurde fast durch einen Konter überrumpelt. Nach einer starken Vorarbeit von Lee verfehlte 05er-Torjäger Jonathan Burkardt mit seinem Versuch nur knapp das Münchner Tor (13.). Bitter für die Gastgeber: Der Stürmer musste nach der Aktion behandelt und wegen muskulärer Probleme im Oberschenkel sogar ausgewechselt werden. Für ihn kam Armindo Sieb in die Partie. Nur kurze Zeit später forderten die Mainzer Anhänger Elfmeter, als Lee im Strafraum zu Fall kam. Schiedsrichter Frank Willenborg ließ aber richtigerweise weiterspielen. Aus dem Gewusel heraus kam Anthony Caci nach einer Ecke frei zum Abschluss. Sein Schuss stellte FCB-Keeper Daniel Peretz, der Manuel Neuer (Rippenbruch) erneut ersetzte, aber vor keine Probleme (29.). Kurz vor der Pause traf Jae-Sung Lee (41.) zum verdienten 1:0 für den Außenseiter. Die Münchner Defensive sah dabei im Kollektiv überhaupt nicht gut aus. Nach dem Seitenwechsel versuchten die Münchner, mehr Druck zu erzeugen. Doch die Mainzer wehrten sich weiter wacker - und erhöhten aus dem Nichts auf 2:0. Wie schon beim ersten Tor legte Sieb für Lee (60.) auf. Auch danach entfachte der FCB nicht wirklich Gefahr. Die Münchner wirkten gegen eine nun tief stehende Mainzer Mannschaft mitunter kraft- und ideenlos. Ein Kopfball des dieses Mal ansonst blassen Jamal Musiala rauschte nach einem Freistoß über das Tor (74.). Erst in der Schlussphase waren die Bayern dominant.
