Michigan State left no doubt Thursday night in the San Diego County Credit Union Holiday Bowl. The No.16 Spartans scored five straight touchdowns in the second and third quarters on the way to a dominant 42-17 win over No. 18 Washington State. With the victory, Michigan State reached the 10-win barrier for the eighth time in program history and the sixth time under head coach Mark Dantonio. And, in the last game of his 11th season in East Lansing, Dantonio recorded his 100th win as MSU's head coach. Led by quarterback Brian Lewerke's arm and legs, Michigan State scored 21 unanswered points in the second quarter to take a 21-3 halftime lead. The Spartans tacked on another touchdown on the opening drive of the second half, and they scored again to go up 35-3 after recovering a fumble on Washington State's first possession of the third quarter. The Cougars, playing without starting quarterback Luke Falk because of injury, finally found the end zone late in the third quarter and added another score midway through the fourth, but LJ Scott thwarted any hopes of a comeback with a 28-yard touchdown with six minutes to play. Lewerke threw for 213 yards and three touchdowns on 13-for-21 passing and added another 73 yards rushing on 14 attempts. He left the game after taking a big hit during the third quarter but came back to hold for the extra point after Damion Terry finished the drive with a touchdown. Lewerke was back on the field at QB for MSU's next drive and finished the game after Terry later threw an interception. Felton Davis III caught four passes for 118 yards and a touchdown, while Cody White scored touchdowns on two of his three receptions. Lewerke led Michigan State in rushing until Scott's second touchdown run game him 110 yards on 18 carries (6. 1ypc).MSU came up empty on its first two possessions Thursday, punting on the first and turning it over on downs on the second. Meanwhile, after Washington State went three-and-out on its first drive, Cougars QB Tyler Hilinski dinked and dunked his way down the field on a 14-play drive that started inside the WSU 10-yard line and ended with a 45-yard field goal. Following a second Washington State three-and-out, though, Michigan State took over possession at its own 19-yard line with less than two minutes to play in the first quarter. The Spartans held the ball for the next 9:24 until Lewerke scrambled on 3rd-and-9 from the Cougars 15-yard line and eventually found White in the back of the end zone to put Michigan State on the board. MSU's next drive took less than a quarter of the time but also ended with a touchdown, as Lewerke's early success running the ball led to Davis being wide open for a 49-yard touchdown on a play-action pass. The Spartans then capped their huge second quarter with a three-yard run by Scott after a third straight three-and-out from Washington State. Michigan State outgained WSU 206-27 in the second quarter while running 26 offensive plays to Washington State's eight. The Sp
TUCSON, Ariz.- It was nearly one year ago that a group of joyous Oregon State football players entered the Valley Football Center media room, playfully slapping coach Gary Andersen across the chest. The Beavers' had just won by 25 points over Arizona in what turned out to be the most thorough victory of the 30-game Andersen era, a moment internally viewed as progression toward the impending completion of a multi-year rebuild. On Saturday night inside the cement bowels of Arizona Stadium, interim coach Cory Hall was in Andersen's place following a 49-28 loss to the Wildcats, who set a single-game school record of 534 rushing yards as the gap between OSU and the rest of the Pac-12 appeared as stark as ever.Calm in tone, Hall repeatedly said that the players "deserve better" and expressed frustration with the defensive coaching staff.Hall never named any assistants, but contrasted his praise for the team's offensive adjustments with the Beavers' continued deficiencies against the run."You saw Arizona run weak side," Hall said."You saw Cal run weak side (last week). So at some point you have to look elsewhere and kind of adjust and put players in a better situation. We have to do better. It has to be top priority. .I'm not unhappy with our players on defense." Asked if he would need to be more hands-on with the defense going forward, the cornerbacks coach said, "Absolutely." The Beavers' eighth consecutive loss dropped them to 1-9 (0-7 Pac-12), two losses away from what would be the second winless slate of conference games in three years. They were 21-point underdogs against a recharged Arizona (7-3, 5-2) team led by sensational sophomore quarterback Khalil Tate, who continued his season of dominance before exiting in the fourth quarter with the game in hand.Tate did to Oregon State what he had done to opposing defenses since taking over the starting job five games into the season. He rushed for 206 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries, including a 71-yard score with 9:39 remaining in the third quarter to put OSU down 35-7 in front of an announced crowd of 40,984.Two Arizona running backs - JJ Taylor (129 yards on 10 carries) and Nick Wilson (101 yards on 17 carries) - also crossed the 100-yard threshold, one week after California running back Patrick Laird had a career-high 214 rushing yards against the Beavers."At the end of the day, it's on us," said safety Jalen Moore, who finished with a team-high nine tackles."We were making mistakes, technical mistakes; not lining up right. We kind of shot ourselves in the foot." The offensive adjustments OSU made, if nothing else, forced Arizona to keep Tate in the game into the fourth quarter. The Beavers tallied 278 second half yards after mustering only 82 in the first two quarters. They averaged 5.3yards per carry in the final half, as Ryan Nall had 95 yards on 22 carries and Thomas Tyner, who was questionable entering the week, had seven carries for 42 yards.Oregon State only totaled 34 yards on 18 rushes (1.9ya
Watch as Khalil Tate helped Arizona football set a school record for rushing yards (534 yards) as Tate finished the night with 206 yards rushing and two scores. The Wildcats topped Oregon State, 49.28.
