They’ve also landed 6’1 point guard Sharife Cooper with the 48th overall pick. Both guys could be considered draft steals by Hawks GM Travis Schlenk most especially Johnson, as the Duke forward was widely considered to be a lottery pick in a lot of NBA mock drafts. While at Duke, Jalen Johnson only played 13 games but averaged a solid statline of 11.2 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game, while shooting 52 percent from the field and 44 percent from deep. Johnson is considered to be one of the most versatile forwards in the draft because of his natural playmaking ability that goes with his 6’9 frame and 7’0 wingspan. And in the NBA Summer League, Sharife Cooper drained the game-winning three-pointer vs. the Pacers but Johnson put up solid numbers throughout the Hawks first two summer league games, putting up 20 points and 10 rebounds in a loss against Boston and 18 points and 10 rebounds in a win against Indiana. Johnson will be another wing who will join a loaded Atlanta Hawks rotation which features guys like 6’7 Kevin Huerter and 6’8 wings Cam Reddish and De’Andre Hunter. Hawks rising star Trae Young made his first playoff appearance last season and took the team all the way to the 2021 Eastern Conference Finals with the help of veterans Bogdan Bogdanovic, Danilo Gallinari, Clint Capela, and Lou Williams. Trae Young just signed a 5-year 207 Million max extension. But moving forward, Trae Young will need to count on guys like John Collins, Onyeka Okongwu, Hunter, Reddish, and Huerter to lead the Hawks. But is Jalen Johnson the perfect wing next to Trae Young?
