When Hockey Resumes, How Should the 2020 NHL Playoffs Be Formatted?

With the uncertainty caused by the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic, the 2019-2020 NHL season is up in the air. If the league is able to get back to playing hockey, how should the 2020 NHL Playoffs be formatted? NHL broadcaster Drew Goldfarb gives you his thoughts, breaking down a proposal that is part March Madness, part MLB Wild Card Game, with all of the excitement of the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs. When looking at the NHL standings when the league paused the season, there are some clear-cut playoff teams: the Washington Capitals, Philadelphia Flyers, Pittsburgh Penguins, Boston Bruins and Tampa Bay Lightning are all locks from the Eastern Conference. The Vegas Golden Knights, Edmonton Oilers, St. Louis Blues, Colorado Avalanche and Dallas Stars are all locks in the Western Conference. But what about teams like the Toronto Maple Leafs, Carolina Hurricanes, Columbus Blue Jackets, New York Islanders, New York Rangers, and Florida Panthers? Or the Calgary Flames, Winnipeg Jets, Nashville Predators, Vancouver Canucks, and Minnesota Wild? With so much hockey still to be played when the season was paused, how do you account for that in playoff seeding? ----- You can follow Drew Goldfarb on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook with username @DrewGoldfarb.
