Challenge Cup Highlights - Fife Flyers 5 Edinburgh Capitals 2 Fife Flyers, sponsored by Arnold Clark Mercedes-Benz, got their 2017/18 Challenge Cup campaign underway on Saturday night at Fife Ice Arena as the Edinburgh Capitals visited for the first competitive game of the new season. Heading into the first competitive action of the season Flyers had a split record, having won 3 games and lsot 3 games in their preseason schedule. Flyers went into the game missing Brits Sean Beattie and Reece Cochrane, as well as Shayne Stockton who is still out with an upper body injury. The opening period action saw a very even match up between the two sides, however it was Flyers who got the go ahead goal when Liam Heelis pounced on a loose puck to put Fife 1-0 up at 4:20. At the half way point in the opening period a high elbow from Tyler Plews at centre ice was a bit of a flash point however Flyers ended up on the penalty kill following penalties for Tommy Muir and Danick Gauthier. In the 2nd period and it was the Capitals who got themselves on the scoresheet early on when Sergei Banashkov tied the game up firing a shot from the point to beat Andy Iles in the Flyers net at 23:10. It didn't take Fife long to restore their lead when Chase Schaber picked up the puck at the Capitals net and fire the puck beyond Pavel Shegalo at 28:52. A flurry of goals in the 3rd period from Flyers ensured they sealed the win after Evan Bloodoff (41:12), Danick Gauthier (42:59) and Liam Heelis (44:58) scored 3 goals in 4 minutes for Fife. Edinburgh pulled one goal back when Marek Tvrdon made it 5-2 at 46:31, but with Flyers dominating the 3rd period the Capitals were unable to find a way back in the game.
