The Hawks improved over their blowout loss to Illinois last week, but still couldn't get enough offensive scoring in the second half. Paul Burmeister completed 25 of 49 passes for 249 yards and 1 TD. Bobby Diaco forced a fumble on the goal line to keep Iowa within a touchdown at half. Larry Blue brought had four sacks and Mike Wells had two sacks to lead the defense. But the Hawks were shut out in the second half and were not able to score. MSU was able to rush the ball successfully. Duane Goulbourne rushed for 213 yards on 29 carries for the Spartans. The loss was the first time in six games at Spartan Stadium that Hayden Fry had lost since taking over at Iowa (which might be why the fans stormed the field).
