After he divorced Charlie Finley and the Oakland A's after two World Series crowns, and then bombed with the Angels, he arrived in Montreal for the 1977 campaign as a free agent bench boss and made the Red, White and Blue (finally) into AL East contenders, but his failure to help sign Reggie Jackson, plus his hard line approach to veterans and youngsters alike over five long seasons, saw him fired in September of 1981 just days after Canada's Team clinched their only divisional playoff berth
