The only reason the Canadiens had never won this trophy before is because they had never been eligible to win it. With the realignment of the NHL's divisions this season due to COVID-19, there was no Eastern and Western Conference, so one semi-final winner gets the Campbell Bowl (usually awarded to the Western Conference winner) and the other semi-final winner gets the Prince of Wales Trophy (usually awarded to the Eastern Conference winner).
