Nothing is ever certain before the final day of Paris-Nice. That statement has never rung more true than last year when Roglič, who until then had led the race with an iron fist, fell victim to a spate of crashes and mechanicals, ultimately losing his large buffer and conceding the race lead to Schachmann. This year’s final stage is even more difficult than last year’s, with five categorised climbs crammed into just 115.6km. There are more opportunities for the leader’s closest rivals to attack him too - the best of which, the Col d’Èze (6km at 7.6%), falls in the final 20km. Defending yellow on a day like this is no easy task, even if the jersey feels secure nothing is guaranteed until the leader crosses the line in Nice!
