Despite the change of fixture by one week (initially scheduled for 13th September 2014) which effected us negatively since various players were unable to play, Mqabba FC U17 squad managed to beat Zejtun Corinthians FC with two goals to nil. It was a good start for Mqabba FC with various occasions on goal. However Mqabba FC had to wait till the last minute of the first half to open the score with Ramon Zammit (Number 2) scoring the first goal of the season for Mqabba FC. This goal filled our players with more confidence. Before this goal, Ismael Grech of Zejtun was shown the yellow card in the 30th minute. Just few minutes after both Captain Mark Baldacchino (Number 15) (33 minute) and Enoch Seychell (Number 14) (39th minute) were shown the yellow card. This proved that both sides were very nervous, aware that a win will place them in an advantage situation to pass for the groups stage. For the second half we were expecting Zejtun C FC to come all out for the equalizer but it was the turn of our number 10 Karl Saliba who punished the opponents in the 8 minute by scoring the second goal for Mqabba FC and his first personal goal for the season. Zejtun side were seen demoralized with this goal. In the 10th minute Dailin Zammit (Number 9) of Zejtun FC was shown the yellow card. For the last fifteen minutes of the match, our number 17 Ryan Farrugia was substituted by Kayden Schembri (Number 3). In the 35th minute of the match Kyle Azzopardi (Number 21) of Mqabba FC was also shown the yellow card for a foul caused on the opponent. The last few minutes of the match were very confusing and high temperatures on both sides, with Zejtun FC pressing for a goal and Mqabba FC players controlling the match. Second leg will be held on the 27th September 2014 at Siggiewi ground. This victory for Mqabba FC side means that Coach Clifford Vassallo who was unable to attend for this first match of the season, has to accept the ASL Ice Bucket challenge as promised some days ago. Well done Boys in Red!
