Rapid Reaction: Parnell Motley and Oklahoma beat Chuba Hubbard and Oklahoma State (again)

Rapid reaction: With the 34-16 win in Stillwater, No. 7 Oklahoma downed No. 21 Oklahoma State in another round of survival in the hope of seeking a third consecutive appearance in the College Football Playoff. The win was OU's fifth consecutive in the Bedlam series. With No. 5 Alabama losing to No. 15 Auburn and No. 8 Minnesota losing to No. 12 Wisconsin, the Sooners have two less programs to worry about securing the fourth spot in the Playoff. The Sooners will get a No. 9 Baylor team looking to avenge its only loss this season in the Big 12 title game next Saturday after taking care of business against the Pokes. Corner back Parnell Motley forced a fumble—literally. He stripped OSU wide out Braydon Johnson at the OU 41-yard line, and the Sooners took over possession with 1:45 left in the first quarter. The takeaway gave the Sooners an opportunity to retake the lead with 14:54 left in the half when Riley dialed up a reverse, wide out throwback—the Sooner Special—to Hurts for a 4-yard score. The Sooners led 17-7 in Stillwater. The last time OU went up 17-7 on the road, the Sooners lost to Kansas State in Manhattan. On the next series, Motley appeared to record his second takeaway of the game when defensive end Ronnie Perkins hurried quarterback Dru Brown into an interception that was overturned on review by officials. The Cowboys salvaged three points on the possession to make the score 17-10 with 9:40 left in the half. They were doing their best to make sure that didn’t happen again by containing OSU running back Chuba Hubbard, which was easier written than done. Hubbard busted OU up for 79 yards on 16 carries—4.9 yards per carry—in the first half while OSU receiver Dillon Stoner caught six passes from for 56 yards in the half, including one 42-yarder from Brown. After heading into the locker room at halftime with OU leading 20-13, Motley forced another fumble at the start of the second half. The Pokes managed three points to close the deficit to 20-16 with just fewer than 10 minutes left in the third quarter. But the Sooners began to put distance between themselves and the Cowboys. On the legs of running back Kennedy Brooks, OU drove 93 yards on 11 plays in their next drive to go up 27-16 while using six minutes, 19 seconds in the third quarter. The commitment to the running game was apparent. With 10 minutes, 52 seconds left to play, Riley had called 52 offensive plays. 37 of them were runs. 20 of them were runs by Kennedy Brooks who had over 150 yards at the point in the game, and Hurts had run as many times as he’d passed the ball (15) when he found Brayden Willis wide open in the end zone to extend OU’s lead to 34-16 in the game. That also made for Willis’ third straight game with a touchdown catch. Another stop by Alex Grinch's defense gave OU another possession to run time off the clock and all but out of reach when OSU took over possession again with 6:14 left to play. And, then, with 3:18 left to play Motley came up with the game-sealing interception to end the game.
