Long ago there was an orphan Sioux boy who liked running and boxing. Highly focused, he would graduate from the Univeristy of Kansas before joining the United States Marine Corps. It was as a simple USMC First Lieutenant that he would decide to compete in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics in the 10,000m run. Nobody knew who he was. Even worse, he would be racing against the event’s world record holder when he had only just got his first pair of new shoes the night before. From the starting gun the 6.1 mile race was brutally competitive, locked dead even as the leaders entered a step for step battle on the home stretch - with our guy and the world record holder battling it out, a third man hot on their heels. At the last moment, against all instinct, our man relaxed his whole body and let his stride flow naturally. Amazingly, he pulled ahead and surged over the finish line at the last minute, victorious. He is the only American to EVER win the Olympics in the 10,000m race. His name is Billy Mills, also know by his Sioux name Tamakhóčhe Theȟíla. Sioux warrior. Marine.
