JULY 1, 2021 - Mexico surprised Russia at the Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Split. Mexico recovered from a loss in the opener to Germany with a 72-64 win. Gustavo Ayon (207-C-85) gave his team the first points in the game as Mexico finished the opening period with an 18-16 run. Russia replied with a massive 20-13 surge in the second frame as Francisco Cruz (191-SG-89,) and Timofey MOZGOV closed the half at 36-31 for Russia. Mexico replied with a 19-7 rally in the third period and Daniel Amigo (208-C-95,) scored 58-48 early in the last. Semen Antonov (202-F-89) and Semen Antonov reduced to 61-56, while Gustavo Ayon scored a free throw for 6-point advantage. Paul Stoll (180-PG-85) later nailed a three for 65-56 when it became clear about the winner. Gustavo Ayon and again Paul Stoll scored for 72-64 that became the final result in the game. Francisco Cruz top-scored for the winners with 21 points, whilst Gustavo Ayon and Paul Stoll had 11 each. Semen Antonov answered with 13 points in a loss and Andrey Vorontsevich (207-PF-87) had 11.
