Los Angeles Angels pitcher Jake Jewell suffered what appeared to be a serious ankle injury while covering the home plate after a wild pitch against the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday night. While on the mound in the eighth inning, Jewell unleashed a wild pitch to Red Sox hitter Mitch Moreland. J.D. Martinez, who was at third base, ran home, while Angels catcher Martin Maldonado sent the ball and threw it to Jewell, who ran to cover the base. Jewell slipped while covering the home plate and his right foot twisted awkwardly under him. Jewell stayed on the ground for quite some time, and finally had to be taken out of the field on a stretcher. Jewell, who was retired from Triple-A Salt Lake Bees on Wednesday, was making his third appearance in a Major League career. He's being evaluated, I think, at Massachusetts General, said Angels manager Mike Scioscia.
