Ukraine claims Russian military cut electricity to Chernobyl | Ukraine News | NewsRme

On Wednesday, the Chernobyl plant operator claimed that Russian soldiers had cut the reactor's electrical system. In a Telegram message, Ukrenergo, the Chernobyl plant's state-owned grid, said that there is "no chance" of repairing the lines due to Russia's military operations in Ukraine. Due to Russian occupation, the nuclear power station in Chornobyl was isolated from the electricity system. Ukenergo wrote, "The nuclear plant has no electricity supply." According to the firm, "the military activities are ongoing, thus there is no chance of restoring the connections." Last month, Russian soldiers seized control of the Chernobyl nuclear power facility as part of their ongoing invasion of Ukraine." The Zaporizhzhia power facility was also taken by Moscow. According to the Washington Post, even though the Chernobyl facility has been shut down, it still needs energy for cooling, ventilation, and fire suppression systems. On Wednesday, Ukenergo said on Facebook that emergency diesel generators for key systems had been started, however the fuel only lasts 48 hours. The head of the UN nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency, said on Tuesday that "remote data transmission from safeguards monitoring equipment installed at the Chornobyl NPP had been lost." At addition, the group said that "the Agency is investigating the condition of safeguards monitoring systems in additional places in Ukraine and will give more information as soon as possible." For the sake of the plant, Ukraine's Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba wants a ceasefire from Russia so that repair units may go to work.
