Gustavo Vargas headed in a goal at the 93:47 mark to give the Tulsa men’s soccer team a 1-0 win over No. 19 SMU Sunday afternoon in the conference opener for both teams at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium. The Hurricane moved to 3-3-1 on the season and 1-0 in American play, while the Mustangs fell to 6-2 overall and 0-1 in the league. After 90 minutes without a goal, Tulsa and SMU began the first overtime period and were nearly four minutes in when Miguel Velasquez took a corner kick off the near side, sent the ball to the far post and Vargas headed it in. Tulsa had a 10-9 lead in shots. SMU had a 4-3 advantage in shots on goal, while the Hurricane led 6-2 in corner kicks. Alex Harris had a team-best three shots for Tulsa, while Rollie Rocha added two attempts, and five others had one shot. Marcel Da Silva logged all 93:47 in goal and picked up three saves.
