Tyler Toffoli had a goal and an assist after missing 11 games following hand surgery for the Canadiens (8-25-5), who were 0-4-2 in the past six games. Montembeault won his first game since Nov. 20. Joe Pavelski and Tyler Seguin each had a goal and an assist for the Stars (18-16-2), who lost for just the second time in their past 15 games on home ice. Jake Oettinger allowed five goals on 19 shots and was pulled in the third period. Braden Holtby made three saves after missing three games in NHL COVID-19 protocol. Christian Dvorak scored on the power play to give the Canadiens a 1-0 lead off a tic-tac-toe passing sequence from Nick Suzuki and Toffoli at 7:35 of the second period. The puck bounced off Michael Pezzetta as he crashed the net to extend the lead to 2-0 at 7:57. Jacob Peterson cut it to 2-1 when he batted the puck out of the air at 16:24. Toffoli scored a shorthanded goal 1:03 into the third period to give Montreal a 3-1 lead. Dvorak extended the lead to 4-1 off a backhand at 2:38. Seguin tipped in a Joel Hanley shot to cut it to 4-2 at 3:03 but Josh Anderson deflected the puck across the line before the goal dislodged to make it 5-2 at 4:17. Pavelski scored a power-play goal from the top of the crease with the goaltender pulled for an extra attacker at 18:41 for the 5-3 final.
