Virat Kohli is unbeaten on a well made 59 but India still trail by 191 runs with the score at 289/3. Shubman Gill scored a record making ton (128) and was the star of the day for India. Quick recap to the day: Indian openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill continued playing positive cricket in the morning session treating Mitchell Starc as a newbie attacking him and other spinners as well. Matt Kuhnemann got Australia their first breakthrough when he made Sharma to play a bad stroke. Cheteshwar Pujara (42) then added 113 runs with Gill as the opener got to three figures becoming the first Indian opener to score a century in all formats in the same year following his double century in ODI in January and his maiden T20I century last month. Pujara was trapped leg before wicket by Todd Murphy bowling round the wicket the ball just straightened from the line and it was enough to break the big stand. Virat Kohli had some early trouble against Nathan Lyon on 3 consecutive deliveries but he looked like a compact batter which he is after tea. Gill-Kohli added 58 runs for the third wicket but it was time for Shubman Gill to depart as Nathan Lyon snared his wicket trapping him in front of the sticks also getting his first and only wicket of the match so far. Ravindra Jadeja got a promotion at number 5 ahead of Shreyas Iyer and he has added 44 runs in a slow scoring final session with Kohli and broke the shackles with a big six over long on. Only three wickets fell in the day which had little amount of something for the spinners. The Aussies need to pull a trick off the hat tomorrow to push for a positive result as India which bats deep get closer to the total. Virat Kohli also looks set for another big knock. Shubman Gill: "It feels great. Always a great feeling. I love batting here. IPL is around the corner and this is my IPL home ground. The pitch was good to bat on. Anything that was happening was off the rough area and I just played watchfully. Honestly it was more about being positive and getting the singles. They had an in out field and were not attacking. We had to be positive and wait for the bad balls. I mean we are 3 down now. We hope to bat well and get close to the total and get closer to the total. Anything can happen on Day 5. But we are taking it day by day. We are not thinking too far ahead. Let's see how we go about it tomorrow." Session Breakdown (Day 3): Session 1: 27 overs 93 runs 1 wicket - Session 2 : 26 overs 59 runs 1 wicket - Session 3: 36 overs 101 runs 1 wicket. Gill emerged as the star India were looking for at the top of the order playing with a mix of attack and defense getting to his 2nd Test ton continuing the form in all three formats. Highlights of Day 3: Shubman Gill notched up his second Test ton his first Test century in India - Gill and Pujara had a pivotal 113-run partnership for the second wicket - Virat Kohli became the fifth Indian batsman to reach the 4000-run mark in Tests on - Indian soil - Kohli scored a Test fifty after 14 months his last half century came against SA in Jan 2022 - Australia took the second new ball after 94 overs but Kohli and Jadeja survived that comfortably.
