Chelsea Tactical Analysis: Why the midfield struggled vs. Palace | TotalTactics Football Podcast EP9

In this episode, we analyse the Crystal Palace v. Chelsea FC game through the lens of the Chelsea midfield, which was a particular storyline that stuck out to us. We look at some of the tactical issues of Chelsea's midfield and the results of them conceding goals in transition when two out of the three starting midfielders like Barkley and Mount move forward to support the attack with wingers Pulisic and Willian, leaving Gilmour who had his 2nd Premier Leauge start out to dry. Ultimately, the key issue with Kante and Kovacic being out is Jorginho not being played in the holding role, which led to moments where Palace led in the possession and created multiple chances vs Chelsea at home. By contrast, when Jorginho came on he was able to control the game a bit more, which brought the possession back to Chelsea as they tried to hold onto their lead. We discuss whether Lampard is doing this as a result of negotiations with Jorginho going astray, but ultimately conclude that he is needed, at least to make sure that Chelsea secures a Champions League qualifying spot as they move up to 3rd on the table.
