Peñarol 4 - 2 River Plate (Arg) - 3er Final Copa Libertadores 1966 #campeon #estoespeñarol
El 20 de mayo de 1966 el Club Atlético Peñarol se consagró campeón por tercera vez de la Copa Libertadores tras vencer en el partido final a River Plate por 4 a 2 en el Estadio Nacional de Santiago. Los goles de Alberto Spencer (2), Julio César Abbadie y Pedro Rocha concretaron una de las hazañas más grandes en la historia del torneo, dado que el carbonero perdía 2 a 0, logró igualar y en el alargue se quedó con el trofeo. ¿Puede imaginarse un equipo que comience la Copa perdiendo un clásico por 4 a 0 y luego transformarse en uno de los elencos más grandes de toda la historia venciendo al mismísimo Real Madrid en España para obtener la Copa Intercontinental? El Peñarol de 1966 lo hizo. Para ese año la Copa de Campeones de América se pasó a llamar Copa Libertadores y de diez participantes en 1965 pasó a 17 clubes en la séptima edición del torneo continental, sin representantes brasileños. El equipo dirigido por Roque Gastón Máspoli (arquero campeón del mundo con Uruguay en el Maracanazo), tenía a Ladislao Mazurkiewicz como golero, quien con apenas 21 años ya se erigía como uno de los mejores en su puesto de todo el planeta. La zaga férrea con el paraguayo Juan Lezcano y Nelson Díaz, tenía también complementariedad con dos laterales de calidad: Pablo Forlán y Omar Caetano. Forlán incluso luego jugó en San Pablo para transformarse en uno de los mejores marcadores de punta del paulista. Por las semifinales, al grupo A lo integraron Boca, Independiente, River y Guaraní; en el B estuvieron Peñarol, Nacional y Universidad Católica. Peñarol repartiría triunfos con el club chileno pero vencería a Nacional en las dos ocasiones: primero otra vez 3 a 0 con tres goles de Rocha y luego por la mínima diferencia con tanto de Cortés. En la zona media se encontraba Néstor ‘Tito’ Gonçalves, quien profesionalmente sólo defendió la camiseta aurinegra. Lo acompañaban los volantes Julio César "El Pocho" Cortés (quien llegó a jugar tres mundiales con Uruguay) y Pedro Virgilio Rocha, uno de los mejores jugadores en la historia del fútbol uruguayo. Rocha disputó cuatro mundiales, fue ídolo en Brasil y tenía una capacidad goleadora extraordinaria. Las finales del torneo serían entre River y Peñarol. La primera se jugó en Montevideo con triunfo carbonero por 2 a 0 (Abaddie y Joya) y en la revancha el millonario ganó 3 a 2 (los goles del aurinegro fueron de Spencer y Rocha). El 20 de mayo se disputó la final definitiva y el equipo argentino se iba al descanso con dos tantos de ventaja (Daniel Onega, el goleador de esa edición, y Jorge Solari los autores). Sin embargo algo ocurrió a los quince minutos del segundo tiempo que despertó el orgullo carbonero, un cabezazo mirasol fue contenido de pecho por el arquero Amadeo Carrizo; algo que el argentino hacía habitualmente pero molestó a Peñarol, que respondió con juego y goles. Primero Abbadie puso el descuento y luego Spencer marcó la igualdad para ir a alargue. En el mismo otra vez las figuras ofensivas anotaron (Spencer para la ventaja y Rocha para el 4 a 2 definitivo) y Peñarol se consagró campeón habiendo remontado dos goles en contra. El poder ofensivo del aurinegro era espectacular con el peruano Juan Joya, el ecuatoriano Spencer (el máximo goleador de la historia de la Copa) y Abbadie (“Yo quiero escribir como juega Abbadie” llegó a declarar el escritor uruguayo Eduardo Galeano). Además, entre los relevos estaba el talentoso delantero Héctor ‘Lito’ Silva. Esta Copa le permitió a Peñarol tener su revancha con el Real Madrid por la Copa Intercontinental, en cuya primera edición (1960) había sido vencido por el equipo español. El 12 de octubre ganó el equipo uruguayo con doblete de Spencer y la revancha en el inexpugnable Charmartín también fue triunfo carbonero con goles de Rocha y del ecuatoriano. Así, los resultados simplemente acompañaron lo que en cancha se observaba: ese equipo era indiscutidamente campeón del mundo en ese 1966 y fue uno de los mejores de toda la historia del fútbol mundial.
